@jzs42069 I worked nights in Canada for years. Summer was fine, because the sun didn't really set until like 10 and it rose by 6. But in the winter daylight would literally be like, 8-5 and I'd go two weeks without seeing the sun.

@gayhobbes @elchapo @radicalrobit According to George Takei it's from the Sulu Sea in the Philippines, apparently because Roddenberry wanted the character to be pan-Asian rather than any specific ethnicity. Giving him a Japanese first name didn't even happen until after TOS ended, and was first done by an extended universe author.

@thatcosmonaut @gayhobbes @realmaxkeeble I think representative democracy has a place, but if you start from the position that people are stupid - rather than very busy living their lives - your democracy is going to suck shit.

@seasharp @realmaxkeeble @gayhobbes @thatcosmonaut unfortunately it's very difficult to break the teenage mentality that people who know less than us are dumb rather than just not as informed about a specific topic. Especially since the former allows us to feel morally superior while the latter requires us to be empathetic to the different ways people choose to live their lives.

@leonthotsky @NoGodsNoSenpais @cjwyoming *standing in front of Yemen and waving a hand mystically towards the UN* This is not the imperialist war and brutal famine you're looking for.

@naturefan I sincerely hope there is no revolution, but these are skills (along with basic cookery, sewing, and DIY) that are good to have regardless.

@goodleftyfundies about 95% of the time. The other 5% of the time it's correctly applied to people who think signing change.org petitions is activism and I can't be too mad.

@comradetaylorswift @evan yes, they do. And the fact those are inevitably the same people who can't name an amendment after the second is not a coincidence.

@Absolutely_Blakely @Secondary_world serving as the justice system of mastodon is a difficult job in a ramshackle system but damn do we do it well
