I have never owned a #Casio watch in my life. Am hoping to avoid the inevitable Watch Trials. I’ve heard there will be cries of “Witch!” @fosstodon @kev #CasioCult 😄 😄 😄 ⌚ ⌚ ⌚

For those looking for the instructions on killing your Twitter account, I’ll save you the trouble. You start with **deactivating** it:https://help.twitter.com/en/managing-your-account/how-to-deactivate-twitter-accountOnce you deactivate it, a 30-day countdown begins to automatic deleltion of the account. During that time, you can undo this by logging back in. (This is reminiscent of how it works with Facebook, IIRC.)This also deactivates any Twitter Developer access you may have had.

#introduction (pinned/edited from an earlier effort) ...Retired in 2021 after 40+ years of work, including over 30 as a marketing/tech professional.Website is https://www.brycewray.com (RSS and JSON feeds, hint hint).Nerdy advocate for static websites and the tools that build them. Inveterate supporter of the Oxford comma.Husband, father, grandfather, son, brother. Native Texan but opinions are atypical for an Old White Guy from Texas.I keep some odd hours.

@JonChevreau It’s also called the “serial comma.”Example:“I am going to Atlanta, Boston, and Cincinnati on my trip.”The Associated Press style says not to use the last comma (which is the aforementioned Oxford or serial comma):“I am going to Atlanta, Boston and Cincinnati on my trip.”While that example isn’t so confusing, the problem comes in more complex pairings... 1/2

@JonChevreau Oh, yes; it maximizes clarity.Besides, the reason **why** AP style prohibits the Oxford comma is from long ago, when newspapers were the only mass media about which the AP cared. It was based only on saving ink by not printing the extra character.

@JonChevreau ...such as:“Today I will be backing up files, checking my emails, and sorting through and reviewing some old cassette tapes.” That’s perfectly fine with the serial comma, but without it, things get awkward. And, believe me, in what you generally see in business writing or complicated news stories (all adhering to AP style), I mean **really** awkward.2/2

Fifty-nine years ago today, I was an eight-year-old boy who was absent from school due to a case of the mumps. Thus, that afternoon, I was home, lying on the couch in the living room (the only room in the house with a TV) while my mother watched _As the World Turns_ — only to hear Walter Cronkite’s first bulletin about the shooting of President Kennedy. To this day, I still recall the look of horror I saw on my mother’s face when I turned to get her reaction. #JFKAssassination

@kwf I was being facetious — as of now, there’s no way to do that AFAIK — but I’d guess just about every other instance would individually ban such an instance, much like some of the pro-hate instances have been banned by virtually all other instances.

@zachleat Indeed. As I wrote once:“If you’re reading a URL to somebody, don’t say ‘forward slash.’ That’s the only kind of slash that URLs have. Let’s keep that ‘backward slash’ crap in Windows where it belongs.”

@benjaminhollon @joel ...but always using it is more logical than what its opponents (like the AP) suggest, which is using or not using it on a case-by-case basis. Sometimes not using it results in confusing sentences. It would be simpler if — as in my long-ago youth — the OC were taught as *the* way to go.(The AP hates the OC because it uses more ink. Hard to care in a time when print media are dying.)
