Why are animated skeletons always running around naked? If you put on a cool robe with a hood, people would take you more seriously because you might be a lich or something. Dress for the job you want.

@ParadeGrotesque Every self-made billionaire story about "starting out in a garage" glosses over the fact that the garage was attached to their millionaire parents' mansion.

The English suffix "-ard" (as in "drunkard", "laggard", "braggard", and "sluggard") is used to make adjectives into deprecating nouns. "He's drunk" is just a description."He's a drunkard" is a moral judgment that finds the subject lacking. The same process turned "he's wise" into "he's a wizard". "Wizard" was the medieval equivalent of "smartass".

In traditional Irish dance, you have to keep your hands down by your side and not use your arms at all, unless you're the goalie.

History: In 1918, the Romanov family was assassinated by revolutionaries, but the body of young Anastasia Romanov wasn't found in the aftermath.Animators trying to one-up Disney: "Maybe she survived and went on a magical adventure!"

'Tis the season, so I'm thinking about #vampires. In Bram Stoker's "Dracula", he repeatedly refers to the garlic used to ward off vampires as "flowers". Dr Van Helsing has them delivered from the Netherlands, where they know about growing flowers from bulbs. When Lucy wears a necklace of garlic, it isn't a string of papery white bulbs like you might have in your pantry for cooking. She has a garland of these blooms.

Also, it isn't the 1890s anymore. If you're going to hunt vampires, please obtain a permit and obey the legal limits. Despite a brief period of recovery in the mid-20th century, wild vampire populations have dwindled to historic lows due to poachers and the prevalence of UV blacklights in Goth nightclubs.

@HonDuMuc @Jaycee Me too! I thought "That looks just like a picture I took at Hồ Hoàn Kiếm..." then I saw the caption and thought "No way!"

#DnD DM tip to really mess with your players' heads:Act as a neutral arbiter of the game's rules and setting. Don't twist wishes to screw them. Don't present them with "gotcha" scenarios designed to make them mess up.Just be fair and reasonable. Their paranoia from past terrible DMs and all the "Evil DM" memes they've seen will have them waiting for you to spring something on them. Then, when they finally let their guards down, just keep being fair. Nobody needs that "Evil DM" stuff.

When your kid proudly shows you that they've learned a new skill or got a good grade on a test, don't just say "I knew you could do it, buddy!"Instead, try saying "Indeed you are powerful as the emperor has foreseen!"

@bluedragon It's actually true! Adding -ard to words in Middle English was equivalent to slang today adding -ass. A drunkard was a drunkass motherfucker. A dullard was a dullass motherfucker. A bollard was a bole (tree trunk)-ass thing.

It's like the opposite of those people that buy a game & download it 13 times. You know you can reopen a PDF after you close it right? Somebody out there has files on their computer labeled "Robots and Ruins pamphlet.pdf""Robots and Ruins pamphlet(1).pdf""Robots and Ruins pamphlet(2).pdf""Robots and Ruins pamphlet(3).pdf""Robots and Ruins pamphlet(4).pdf""Robots and Ruins pamphlet(5).pdf""Robots and Ruins pamphlet(7).pdf""Robots and Ruins pamphlet(8).pdf"and so on up to (13)!

A shuttle can travel through the warp, but it cannot travel at warp speed through the fabric of reality because the warp is the immobile part of the fabric during weaving. The weft is the part that moves back and forth through the warp with the shuttle. If you're going to base all your science-fantasy technobabble on textile manufacturing, maybe you should look up how a loom works first.

Today, I saw a thread asking "What's the stupidest thing you've ever heard?" One response was about a student asking their Latin teacher how to translate "I am traveling by a fast train".That's it.As if you can't say "train" because they didn't have them in ancient Rome or something. Romans could talk about traveling & when the train was invented, it was given the Latin name "locomotive" because Latin was (and is) still cool.Ergo..."Itinero per locomotivo celerī."QED, stulte!

Here's a first! I got a notification on my phone from my messages app that said "incoming spam moved to 'spam & blocked'". I checked the spam folder to see what it was. It was from a Chinese shipping company and said my package was delivered on my doorstep.I looked outside and I actually had a package! (It was something I ordered, but I wasn't expecting it for another week or two and I thought it would be delivered by DHL or FedEx or something.)

In an attempt to break up the constant doom scrolling, I'm going to post random little snippets of information I've picked up over the years. Stuff that is not at all topical because I need a little break from the present horrors.
