@Trilobyter cute hisser! Your wife sounds like my husband on snakes.... When I saw about a 20 foot long rat snake in my living room I wanted to keep them as a rodent removal aide and pet, but as much as he was screaming I knew he'd have sooner divorced me than accept that, so I got on a pair of rubber gloves, for the snakes safety, and used a cane to hold down her head as I picked her up & tossed her into our front yard. #Snakes

Sometimes I think I spend as much time daily shredding cardboard as I do eating, if not sleeping... All for my compost piles, which are often where I plant potatoes. #compostodon #ContainerGardening

@futurebird whenever I get asked "do you miss living in NYC?" ....I always quickly say "no" .... my late grampa Georgy worked at a fish market from the age of 14 to 68 years of age ...and I'm glad he didn't live to see his beloved city become the mess I left it as under a decade ago! *My spouse & I lived within the 5 boroughs for under 4 years & have thusly been in this semirural house for over double that time, having spent most of our lives in a northwestern suburb of NYC.

@mk30 salt, sugar & baking soda are probably the only 3 things that I view as in any way sensible to stock up on as a homesteader, because even as I know there are ways to make/refine other items into these ingredients, it just isn't worth the degree of time, energy & tools needed to do so, and they're all easy enough to store in sizable quantities for a long period of time.

@fiery Just because something can be theoretically done doesn't make it at all worthwhile for all to consider doing it. Not everyone can use a mortar & pestal with any degree of proficiency & my disabling medical conditions definitely place me among those who cannot do so, which is why I'd absolutely never consider using that to hull rice! I overall find it a ridiculous trend & push set for staples like grains, protograins and even tubers, some even whole meals, for people to store 5-10 years worth on their homesteads...and even worse for people to just put a tiny amount aside & keep it there for 10+ years, because inevitably an animal, insect, moisture or raw time will destroy it if that short-term emergency ever happens. But to reiterate rice isn't at all in the same category as Salt, Sugar & Baking Soda, because in space & weight the average household would need in baking soda for 2 years of our average use is less than on rice for just one month, and the same is true for Salt. Sugar isn't as extreme in it's difference with rice, but it's still under 1/2 the average household usage. *Rice having an average consumption of 27lbs per person, per year & average household size being 2.51 people. Wheat being about 129lbs per person, per year and that's something I rather ridiculously see pushed commonly for everyone to try & save 10 years worth, which is completely insane for most people. 10 years worth of baking soda, salt & even sugar, on the other hand, are sensible if you've got enough space for that.#DisabilityAccessibility #Homesteading #GrowYourOwn

@futurebird I lived in NYC for a few years (about a decade ago) , now live in a mapdot where even for people who found smartphones continually useful (I really don't & thusly rarely have one with me), I don't see any of these things as even plausibly helpful to anyone, a horse-drawn carriage loop up & down mainstreet and 1 or 2 parallel ones with a radio & camera or similar being far more sensible. But beyond that for the state capital that I tend to visit about once a week ( Jefferson City, MO ) & a further one that's actually larger (Columbia, MO), both having bus systems, I believe in most medical centers & libraries their are charging stations. Those bigger city's do have "information" screens that pretty frequently made me sick with their ads & PSAs, are near most charging stations, so I can avoid the entire mess together & generally do so. *Next time I'm in Jefferson & Columbia I will look at a few of the bus shelters, but to my current knowledge & easy lookup, beyond a few businesses with charging kiosks that aren't free unless you're a student, it's limited to libraries & medical centers. I am hoping to find out if the radioactive manure that Link is, has similar in any of the cities I now frequently visit. If I do find it in one of said cities, odds are I'll severely curtail if not end those visits over said mess.
