@T_X @mcc I think the "official" Rust book was fine for writing my first couple Rust programs. https://doc.rust-lang.org/stable/book/

@mjg59 The automation engineer on our team has provided me an ansible script which does a lot, but not everything so I follow that with an ssh+sed script. :)

@mjg59 It's more "foundations built on (literal) sand" scary, and not "Laundry Files"-is-real scary, tho, right!?

@jeff @neclimdul @TechConnectify @DoubleA I think System76 gets close. Pop!_OS definitely has a Debian lineage, though the default configuration and the System76 utilities are decidedly Gnome-flavored.That makes System76 hardware easier to deal with for the Debian KDE geek in your community. That geek will almost certainly install it as part of their value to the community, if you want.

@jeff @neclimdul I prefer Debian > Ubuntu > Pop!_OS, too but I don't think that ordering is universal/"objective".Ubuntu, for all its flaws, is still somehow more accessible for more people, and I think that's a good thing. In any case, I find it easier to use my skills to help them with their Ubuntu than with MacOS or MSWin.Pop!_OS... I think the results of that are less good, but if that's what it takes for "Granny" to get phone support from the manufacturer, w/e.

@shanselman Under an OSI license, or one of MS's not actually open source licenses?

@foone I wish I could do this, but I'm no good at "patter", especially while I'm coding.I also use a font size that I have been told is "insanely small", and I suspect video compression will make it unreadable. But, I don't mind showing off my ~~mistakes~~ happy little syntax trees and I've (re)started coding for myself several hours each day.I really should find an PeerTube instance or something and start streaming; I can work on video quality and viewer interaction later, I guess.

@dpiponi They mean that LLMs aren't assigning semantics/meaning to words and testing [the LLM's] use of those words as syntax against the assigned meaning(s).I'm not 100% sure that's a true belief, though it seems likely. It's not like my internal semantics are identical to any printed dictionary or are best communicated in that form. Maybe the model matrices CAN be turned into a semantics, but it seems unlikely.

@foone For some reason, I thought the GNU image manipulator could already do this. Maybe it was just the UI focus on _playing_ scripts last time I used it. (I use #Krita for what little image editing I do for a while now.)

@foone Extremely frustrating when your phone dies while you are traveling, and you are _trying_ to find and pay parts / repair services.Yes, I do have backup codes, *at home*.

@ZachWeinersmith You can use massive vulvae and giant anuses; it doesn't have to be *entirely* dicks.

@foone Best thing about programming is that you don't actually have to solve the problem(s) to have these feelings! ;)

@ZachWeinersmith Depends on where your eyes are (they can't both in the center) and how they are oriented. But, yeah you'd see the surface of your body and the light source(s) with quite a bit of distortion (the curvature of the mirror would stretch the image along that dimension).I haven't done the modeling or experiment, tho. Just thinking about circles and rays, mostly.

@foone I think we've just run out of TLAs. A registry might help, but only if we could get people it use it.IME, the young and the corporate have little care for the ISOs of the world. Ubuntu and Mozilla probably would have conflicted over PPA even with a registry. You can guarantee the youngs would ignore BSD's claim to FFS.IDK, tho.

@ZachWeinersmith I think this is what research is into "embodied" AI. Rather than baking in a physics model, the AI should "learn" "physics" by it's "bodily" interactions with the real world. But also, it would be nice to have a non-sentient robot that could do my laundry from pile/bag via washer/dryer to closet/drawers. Chat-GPT and variants can't do that due to (at least) lack of physical mechanisms.
