my ideal computer world would be something like this:- OSs only exist as windows decorators and they facilitate access to applications. by default, they have no right to inspect my memory or launching a process without my explicit consent.- applications can use their drivers (blueprints for processes that run independently) but i can replace them if i desire so. this means that i can have a game in a USB stick, insert it directly into my computer and it should boot the game as expected, even if my computer doesn't have any driver available.- a generic FOSS driver exists for every network card/disk/memory component, and it works first try, using their full potential. components are matched to an agreed spec, and drivers are based on that spec.- all system libs provide hardware abstractions not tied to a specific OS or even CPU architecture.- containers (as we already know them) are unnecessary. you can have a process called "online-scheduler" and give it enough permissions to have restricted network access and launch other programs.- computers stop wasting cycles in telemetry. by default, when you launch a process, nothing can see what's happening inside it.

nothing to lose and everything to win when you limit the reach of what an OS should do.a single binary that runs on every computer independently of its configuration.i don't believe "heaven" will come from the hands of very specific people paid by corporations to serve their own interest (all OSs are mentioned here, linux ecosystem too) that limit what our hardware is able to do.

@enigmatico probably not. think how much software are involved in rendering a single word from overseas, logic/code paths, cpu cycles wasted... browsers nowadays are almost as big as OSs, and that's a really big concern when you pile them together. i do think that software that big (browser, OS) shouldn't exist for the same reason the tower of babel failed, and i cite the following:Tower of Babel, in biblical literature, structure built in the land of Shinar (Babylonia) some time after the Deluge. The story of its construction, given in Genesis 11:1–9, appears to be an attempt to explain the existence of diverse human languages. According to Genesis, the Babylonians wanted to make a name for themselves by building a mighty city and a tower “with its top in the heavens.” God disrupted the work by so confusing the language of the workers that they could no longer understand one another.
