Trees are not only beautiful, they filter the air we breathe. I planted 25 douglas firs today to replace a small percentage of the trees that were burned in the 2020 Fire and 25 to to go. I had seen Laysan albatross in this area before, but it wasn't until the way out on this visit that we saw a pair of adults, and then looking through the dense flora, I found this little guy on the nest. I came back a week later, and although I didn't get a clear view of the chick, I loved the way he was lifting his wings. I saw 3 Great Horned Owl nests while in the area around Malheur NWR in Oregon, and saw owlets in two of the nests with their mothers, and fathers hanging about too. The owlets are so cute with their big eyes and bobing heads. This was one of the mamas I saw. Babies to follow in a day or so. This was taken just a few days before Felicia, a grizzly, kicked her two cubs, one seen here. It is a harsh reality of nature that between 2 and 3 the cubs have to go on their own. A boar will mercilessly kill the cubs to force the female into estrus so a mother will run the cubs off. The cubs were seen together a few days later, looking a bit confused. I was surprised to see a group of male moose together in a field by Jackson Airport. Later I was told this happens sometimes in winter and after the moose first come down from the higher elevations. A reminder that when you are driving through areas where there is wildlife, drive more slowly and cautiously and not only in National Parks. Too many wildlife are killed by speeding cars. I just love the multitudes of color shades of some of the mountains in Canada and Alaska. They seem to be part rock, part gravel, part dirt, then varying shades of green where grass or other flora is starting to emerge with patches of snow. I really love watching the young of all species as they have so much curiosity, joy, and innocence. This brown bear sow had two cubs of the year. One more independent, and this one that always seemed to be right by her side, usually looking to get anything that was in her mouth into its own mouth, whether it be sedge grass or clams.
