Despite the shit Jordan Peterson gets these days, he did make a great point on his most recent JRE when he was talking about climate modelling and how flawed it is. Something like, "Because the climate involves everything on Earth, you'd have to have a model that could take into account everything on Earth." The same goes for all the infection models. There are more factors at play than the modeller can calculate, so the models are inherently flawed and unreliable. I can't remember who said it, but one of the early dissenters in the field talked about how the field of epidemiology is meant to be mostly a retroactive study of how things played out so they can account for it in future. Not in the moment.
