I'm autistic and after every conversation and text exchange this happens in my brain:"oh crap should I have said something differently oh crap did I say the wrong thing oh crap were they joking oh crap was that a *question*?"@actuallyautistic #actuallyautistic

Many Autistic people are accused of a lack of empathy. Perhaps we are accused of this, not because of the depth of our actual feelings, but because of society expectations to “look” like we care.@actuallyautistic #actuallyautistic #autisticadam #autistic

When I don't pick up on subtext, others think I'm being intentionally rude: This is not true. When I think I'm being detailed and clear, others think I'm being condescending: This is not true. When I try to explain my autistic point of view, they think I'm trying to manipulate them: This is not true.@actuallyautistic #actuallyautistic #autisticadam

Autistic people may immediately say “no” or become distressed when a change of plan is suggested, regardless of whether it’s objectively better/necessary. We aren’t tying to be difficult; our brain has perceived a threat and gone into complete survival mode. This is the “fight” response in us.This is why giving us time to process a suggested change is important. It is for me anyway. If we have to respond instantly, there is a chance we’ll say “no” to something positive, because we haven’t had a chance to fully assess it. Given some time, our initial “no”could become an enthusiastic “yes”.@actuallyautistic #actuallyautistic

Autism, depression and anxiety go together very frequently. I have all three. One reason for this, in my view, is because autistic natural behaviours and traits aren't accepted by society. Yes the society thing again. So we're anxious about looking 'weird' and depressed by others' reactions.@actuallyautistic #actuallyautistic

I’m impressed by how people seem to just fall into friendships. They spend time with someone, chat with them, do things with them, and a lifelong friendship forms. When I try to do these things, I startle people. With my best efforts, I’m lucky if I build a brief, fragile friendship. *Sigh*@actuallyautistic #actuallyautistic
