@GabeLakmann There’s a reason Jocko retired as an O-4. He wanted to quit while he was still a leader and not a politician.

@GabeLakmann Completely agree. As an example, I thought Mark Milley was a very competent brigade commander when I deployed back in 04-05. I think Milley (and a lot of other flag officers) sell their integrity a little bit at a time to get to the next promotion, or to secure that cushy defense contractor job in retirement.

@deprecated_ii Yes, it’s called RED HORSE or something like that. That’s the extent of my knowledge.

@deprecated_ii Good point. The Air Force doesn’t exactly have a reputation for either hard work or improvisation so most of what’s broken/bombed/destroyed is going to stay that way until Army engineers come to fix it.

@Godcast @LouisConde @adalberht The reasonable reform would be to make the loans usury-free so people could actually make progress on paying them back. Kinda hard to pay off large amounts of debt at 7.9%.

@Godcast @LouisConde @adalberht I’m against student loan forgiveness and in favor of massive student loan default.

@LouisConde Organic chemistry requires wordcels to become shape-rotators, so it’s not too surprising that the dropout rate is astonishingly high. I’m guessing you probably need about a 115 IQ to pass o-chem, give or take.

@SuperLutheran @Marshall1Banana The best thing I got out of military service is learning that getting shot at doesn’t scare me that much. And learning to be racist. Other than that, I wouldn’t recommend it.

@Marshall1Banana @SuperLutheran I ended up with a really good civilian career that wouldn’t have happened without serving in the army. I also ended up getting around $80k of educational benefits, which was pretty good considering the GI Bill when I signed my contract was only about $33,000. I made a good decision at the time, but like you said I wouldn’t recommend anyone else go for it unless they don’t have any other viable options. I seriously considering going back into the Guard/Reserve as a medical officer, but after J6 and the botched Afghanistan withdrawal decided I didn’t want anything to do with it ever again.

@Marshall1Banana @MemeLandfill @SuperLutheran When I was in Iraq around 2007 we paid off the local insurgent groups with large amounts of cash to switch sides. (Company commander had about a million in cash in our safe for bribes/contracts/etc.) If this kind of thing is something a conventional army E-4 knows about then I can guarantee it’s happening at a lot higher levels of government as well.

@Marshall1Banana @MemeLandfill @SuperLutheran So at one point I was working in the Bay Area with a doc who had been a SEAL and CIA contractor. (Trained Muj in the 80s then went over to Pakistan to do “humanitarian work after their big earthquake and look for you know who). This guy was absolutely convinced that Bin Laden had undergone a renal transplant that was arranged by the ISI.

@LouisConde @MemeLandfill @Marshall1Banana @SuperLutheran I never went to Afghanistan so I don’t have any firsthand knowledge, but one SF memoir I read (Lions of Kandahar iirc) described how they were absolutely kicking the shit out of a Taliban unit when a bunch of Russian-built helicopters arrived and whisked the Taliban leaders off the battlefield. The author didn’t speculate about the source of the helicopters but Pakistan makes the most sense.

@officalNIGR @Marshall1Banana @MemeLandfill @SuperLutheran Absolutely. If you’re an enlisted guy who can type and spell things correctly most of the time you’re indispensable. (I was also the company medic so I had to go to a lot of mission planning meetings).

@deprecated_ii The excuses out of the SOF community for this kind of behavior run the gamut from “our guys are burned out from the high optempo so they rape, murder and do drugs” to “the optempo is too low, so they are bored and have nothing better to do than do drugs, rape and murder.” Maybe telling guys they’re special human beings because they can ruck march or swim better than average isn’t such a great idea.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @deprecated_ii As a former conventional soldier I have some mixed feelings on SOF. I’ve never been in a SOF unit, just infantry line units, so take it with a grain of salt, I guess. I think there is a real need for specialized units, but they can absolutely be misused. I think the true mission of SF (unconventional warfare/foreign internal defense, etc.) definitely requires an elite force because your regular infantry unit has so many inexperienced and immature soldiers that the NCOs have their hands full just managing their Joes that they won’t be able to effectively train/mentor a partner force. But they definitely rob Peter to pay Paul, and send a message to conventional troops that they’re inferior and not deserving of better training and missions.

@ThatWouldBeTelling @deprecated_ii There also seems to be a trend where the executive branch uses certain JSOC units nonstop until their (previously) high-performing guys break down from TBI to the point where they can’t find their way to the grocery store and back.

@WhiteDissidentRadio @PalePimp The Nazis were truly pioneers in the science of hand surgery. Here I was being all impressed that hand surgeons today can reattach fingers and so forth. Turns out today’s surgeons are just a bunch of buffoons because they can’t do anything this complicated.

@john_rando @WashedOutGundamPilot I flew on an Alaska flight one time where the pilot was named “Amelia.” I thought it would be an ironic way to die.
