I choreograph first dances for weddings for a living and one of my couples did a dance to this song so I’ve listened to it for at least 5 hours. “A thousand years” is a metaphor that alludes to a love beyond time. It is an eternal love for this exact person that has always existed in the heart of the lover, even before meeting. In this way, it is like the song “I Will” by The Beatles.

@SirCandinavian the song continues to say she will love him for a thousand more years. This lyric is inspired by the fact that the artist was commissioned to write this song for Twilight, a show about vampires. It takes a completely different meaning through this lens. Like she is saying she dies everyday longing for her vampire boyfriend to make her a vampire but she is scared. He shouldn’t be afraid to kill her because of her undying love. They are getting “one step closer” to their destiny.
