Generally if it's out on the curbside or in a dumpster on public property, it's legal, but if they have to break a lock, intrude on private property, or it's otherwise secured, it's illegal.This differs by jurisdiction.  Also private investigators can do things other people can't do legally, and even when they actually do break the law, have "privileges" and rarely get prosecuted if they do.

       The one thing that makes me mildly optimistic (even though the guy is an insane retard) is why would they release video of them arresting him in an actually pretty civilized way considering the circumstances, if they were just intending to pull an NKVD style execution?Meh who knows, may be in a mass grave already.
