       @louis @mastodonmigration @jaxwxboss  The difference is that every other instance in the Fediverse does not belong to a company that is known to have spent years obsessively surveilling and compiling massive profiles on virtually anyone anywhere who uses the Internet.  Every other instance has not been implicated in allowing foreign powers to influence U.S. federal elections.  Every other instance isn't run by a guy who has been quoted saying that online anonymity should be abolished.Yes, in theory they could do that, and it's possible the people behind some of them have or will in the future and we just don't know it.  But Bookface *is well documented to have done all that* and that is a meaningful distinction.  The technical capacity and legalities matter, but so do intentions and history. Just because it isn't possible to prevent some data from being gathered does not make it a good idea to throw all caution to the wind and offer one's self up willingly as low-hanging fruit.

       @futurebird Some of the group are so distressed or embarrassed that they seem to have forgotten this person existed that with no more than a nudge of encouragement, they gaslight themselves into 'remembering' her. Soon half the people present are convinced she was on the cheerleading squad or in their AP History class, and reminiscing about the funny messages she wrote in their yearbooks.
