This results in most of the content online about emacs distributions like spacemacs (that do a lot of legwork in creating cohesive, powerful and attractive experiences) being negative towards the very idea. Everybody should start from scratch!It makes no sense, deciding how to build out sensible keybindings for innumerable packages and functions is itself a massively complex and time consuming process.The whole point of software is so we don't have to repeat each others work right?

@hochata Idk, I mainly just use emacs for org mode and have been using spacemacs for years. Doom sells itself as less opinionated than spacemacs and I don't understand why that means it is better.Good opinions are really useful!

@BlackAzizAnansi This is honestly what convinced me that the next 10 years are going to be really scary.If positive change to avert catastrophe (societal and climatological) was going to happen, it would have began in earnest from the societal impacts of covid. A decisive majority of average everyday people were ready for systematic change, but the aftermath of covid made clear this is irrelevant. We will continue on off this cliff.

@BlackAzizAnansi Covid laid bare that collapse is the only realistic future as no amount of public support for radical change changes the fundamental power calculus.The only question now is how true collapse in a modern society looks and how well do we build mutual aid networks to deal with it.Collapse won't look like mad max, more like you can't get your prescription for no reason, all the doctors left the area and staggering amounts of death is normalized alongside everyday life.

@virtualbri @BlackAzizAnansi Fair enough, I have no interest in convincing you that the system cannot be fixed. I know it can't, but doing our best to fix it still saves lives and lessens the immediate impacts of collapse.I see absolutely zero evidence that more support in the US would meaningfully move the needle however. The problem isn't the average person in the US is just stupid and doesn't care, no matter how many times we tell that story about ourselves it doesnt make it true.

Hacker News is usually trash but this is probably the best take on AI hype I have seen yet.LLM chatbots are just a natural next step in search, the reason they feel transformative is search has been utterly broken on purpose in the pursuit of monetization, SEO, ads, the collapse of internet forums, and the siloing of content on the internet off from search engines.LLM chatbots are more of an incremental next step, they just feel transformative because capitalism destroyed the previous step.

@dbattistella I think I have to disagree on the point about police, the actual role of police has nothing to do with protecting people, but rather protecting states of inequality through the use of violence. The police aren't there to protect striking workers, they are quite clearly there to protect the factory owner by containing the strike and distributing violence to intimidate workers back to work and thus preserve the profits of the factory owner.

@kai No, my heart experiences love and warm fuzzy feelings watching Microsoft absolutely fall apart though.I know they don't seem interested in running and maintaining an operating system anymore, but the idea they are going to force the entire computing experience into cloud apps is a hilariously bad strategy that Microsoft is especially ill-suited for executing.
