At first I thought maybe she didn't realise Dylan is a man playing dress up. Then she said something about sex, and it seemed she did know. (The trouble is, I spend my time analysing films--not reading up on controversies.)

Back then, she was my favourite English writer. Once upon a time, she wrote great children's books, especially for girls. Now in my forties, Joanne Rowling is one of my favourite writers. She's brilliant, and I'm so grateful for her. The new movie is a standalone product and a blessing for team reality. Obviously, Judy Blume's stance on "trans" is very unfortunate, and the timing couldn't be worse.

@macha Yes, movies reflect the views of those who make them and the time when they were made but movies are also one of the biggest forces shaping people's perceptions. Film generally, and Hollywood specifically, bear a significant part of the blame for people's regressive, unrealistic attitudes about women. (Sorry for the late reply!)

@ArtistBristol I watched it last night and found it entertaining. It was music to my ears to hear a woman raise feminism (several times) in a men's discussion of film and science fiction. Thank you for mentioning my upcoming film guide for women (film students and the general public)!

Barbie's transformation humanizes her. She goes from an airhead plastic doll to a human. And it's very much her movie. Also, can you name one other big-budget Hollywood movie that depicts women overthrowing a patriarchy? Glamour mag feminism this is not.
