@futurebird @magicalthinking My feeling when I lived there was that basically everybody was quite keen on the shadow labour market, as it was, ultimately, a handy way to ensure plentiful labour that was completely at the mercy of employers large and small, but actually saying that was a little taboo. Unfortunately, it seems that kicking the can down the road until Nazis got into power was probably not the right approach.

@futurebird @david_preston I honestly believe she had never seen a passport in her life and only recognized driver's licenses (and the like) as "government-issued". I was nonplussed, to say the least.
