They worked hard and deserve it! Also we sell your account to ad companies but they're not interested unless they can tie it to a real person.#security #privacy #web

@heap Except I was talking about ecology as an ecologist and I got the *exact* same reaction as when I was talking about China. This isn't a politics thing, this is an everyone and every serious topic thing.

Anyone who's studied the #GeorgeOrwell novel #1984 want to explain to me what the fucking point of "newspeak" is and why it's not a strawman "we're gonna make the commies seem like supervillains and do random stupid shit for no reason" type trope? Because when has any prominent figure in #socialism or #communism ever suggested dumbing down language? Give me an example of a commie language reinvention please, 1984 is supposed to be the definitive manual on what happened under communism isn't it?

Also detecting a hint of racism in that plotpoint because there really are real languages that evolved naturally where the positive and negative expressions are indeed structured as good, not good, very good, very not good, etc. Is it trying to say that people speaking those languages are bad at expressing their thoughts because it's not how English does it? Actually, Chinese is kind of like this with its use of pre/suffixes. Chinese is also one of the best languages for poetry and literature.

Hot take: You shouldn't be allowed to #trademark individual dictionary words. Period. Yes that includes single-word brand names like Mastodon, Tweet, Twitch, Discord, Apple, Tesla, Shell, etc. The notion that you can own a word, one of the most basic elements of language, especially a word that's been in use for anywhere from hundreds to thousands of years BEFORE you or your business even existed, is one of the many ridiculous constructs that #capitalism made up and makes us think is normal.

Hot take on the #Subreddit blackout situation: Unless you're committed to your subreddit shutting down FOREVER in protest of #Reddit corporate, don't bother. It's been tried so many times before and Reddit is well aware that all they have to do is wait for people to forget their latest bullshit antic and everything will open back up. It has literally no bearing on their decisions.#redditblackout #subredditblackout

The #Fediverse and #Metaverse are like water and sodium. They are fundamentally incompatible with each other and can never be integrated in a way that benefits both (when corporate and community-owned things come together it will always benefit the corporate side at the expense of the community-owned side). Anyone who claims they can work together has either been maliciously misinformed or is maliciously misinforming you.

@selea orcas are actively taking revenge on humanity. Orca attacks on boats and individual have been in the rise but there is no sign of predatory or hunting behaviour, so the belief is they're just trying to drive us away from their waters so we stop harming them.

@selea orca pods can swim in sync to form waves that can capsize a small motor boat or knock a larger yaht around. This is a modified behavior from hunting seals where they use waves to knock seals off ice floats.

@thenewoil Always nice to know that companies that operate some of the most powerful machines humanity has ever devised, meant to bestow upon us the powers of flight that the Gods had forbade us from gaining, yet can't even figure out how to keep their servers secure.

We are not "destroying" the Earth and therefore we absolutely do not need to save it. We are, however, making it incompatible with human life, and it's us that we need to save. #green #environment #environmentalism #climate #climatechange #climatecrisis

@thenewoil that's what happens when you relinquish control of your software to a corporation. And for what? Convenience? Marginal cost savings on a dedicated build server?

I remember my high school history textbook's unit on the Industrial Revolution, the first line was "not all revolutions are violent, take the #IndustrialRevolution for example."Then proceeded to talk about toddlers working in factories and getting their hands chopped off by machinery, being forced to work like basically slaves, being beaten by supervisors if they decided they weren't working hard enough.Guess those things don't count. It's not violence, it's just business! #capitalism
