@strider I liked the first two. I just kind of forgot the third one came out. I'll probably check it out once it's discounted on GOG.

Hmm, I've never really dealt with imposter syndrome. I wonder if that says anything about me (like possibly egotistical to some degree or something).https://invidio.us/watch?v=PMcRooza_2M#ExtraCredits #Gaming #Learning #Psychology

@art As someone that works in IT, that can be mind-numbing at times, I can relate.

@art Firefox. I used to dig through all the options and learn what they all did, but no I just follow the recommendations on https://www.privacytools.io/

@matrix Great. Now I have to start looking for a Matrix transport for XMPP.

@art Now you just need to link them via Barrier and pulseaudio. When you have laptops laying around like that, they make great extended desktops.

@tk It depends on what you use it for. Public chat rooms? Sure, it's fine. It's a fancier alternative to IRC, except you can't host your own server.Private messaging in any form? No, not at all. Only the Android and iOS clients support E2EE and it's device specific. You can't have multiple devices in the same E2EE chat like you can with XMPP and OMEMO.

@matt You're not really supposed to change Tor Browser's window size, due to how websites fingerprint your browser canvas. People ignored that advice for years, though, so the implemented that feature to help reduce fingerprinting. It's still not as good as leaving your browser window size alone, but it's better than nothing. It still doesn't help people that fullscreen videos, though.

I've been pushing XMPP a lot lately. Signal is a fantastic bit of software that's FOSS and best for privacy, but the platform isn't really open. It's ultimately controlled by Moxie and the Signal Foundation. They don't want it federating with other servers, the client isn't designed to handle multiple accounts for possible multiple servers, and they don't want any other clients connecting to their server.I'd rather just stick to XMPP and help it improve.#XMPP #Signal #Privacy #FOSS

@debacle @mrayYeah, I used to exclusively use XMPP and email for a time, telling people to email me if they weren't willing to use XMPP. I'd send someone an email and get a response a few weeks later. Since then, though, Conversations/Quicksy has come about and I discovered a nice little XMPP SMS transport at https://jmp.chat/ so it's gone a lot smoother since.

@stevenroose @mray Conversations has a fork called Quicksy. It's far better for onboarding newcomers. It's maintained by the same people and automatically generates a new account on quicksy.im that never costs money. It's how I've gotten most of my family and friends on XMPP. Here's a link to a video of the entire onboarding process.https://invidio.us/watch?v=pb7b6i7fgfk

@js @mray @stevenroose Matrix looked promising when it first started gaining traction. A lot of what it had to offer over XMPP ended up being made into XEPs, though. It also depends heavily on the Riot client, which is electron based. I also prefer the versatility of XMPP transports over the Matrix bridges.Overall, Matrix looks really neat and promising, but XMPP caught up with it an surpassed it in a lot of ways, at least for what I use it for.

@js@stevenroose @gcrkrause @mray Definitely. Luckily, Conversations/Quicksy has become that example for XMPP. A lot of other clients have been working on getting the same feature set going.

@js @stevenroose @gcrkrause @mray Yeah, it's not the flagship, like Riot, just a solid example other clients are starting to look towards. Siskin I've heard decent things about on the iOS front, though I don't have an iOS device to test it with. Luckily, most people I know run Android or an AOSP based OS for their mobiles. Gajim is implementing features to bring it more in line with Conversations/Quicksy for desktop users. There definitely seems to be a renewed energy in XMPP development lately.

@gcrkrause @js @mray @stevenrooseWhen I last looked, it was only Riot that was feature complete. I mostly used Nheko, which was nice and had good OLM support, but it still lacked a lot of features. The other clients were pretty far behind as well. It's been over a year since I've checked the feature chart, though, so things may have changed.

@js@ivan @gcrkrause @debacle @mray @stevenroose I haven't had issues with OMEMO in a few years except when trying Dino. Even then, they were fairly minor bugs. Though, I have most of my friends/family using Conversations/Quicksy and some using Gajim. Both receive a lot of attention. I'm sure plenty of others are lagging behind.Last I looked, Matrix was in a similar state with OLM and its clients. At least both still have a lot more options than Telegram's secret chats.

@stevenrooseIt's definitely a promising client. Once it has support for a tray icon, I'll probably check it out again and probably start recommending it to less tech-savvy friends/family.@js @ivan @gcrkrause @debacle @mray

@cosullivan Both XMPP and Matrix have solid E2EE encryption, OMEMO and MEGOLM respectively. I don't know the state of current Matrix clients, but XMPP has a couple of solid desktop clients along with a great phone client. The desktop clients (mainly Gajim and Psi) work with screen readers. Gajim has also been getting Windows friendly updates, in case your friend isn't running Linux.Matrix has a well supported electron client (Riot) if you want something more in line with Wire or Discord.

@art my 2016 Pixel running LineageOS is still trucking along nicely. I do want to get a hold of a Pinephone to give that a try.
