One of my all-time favorite spots, the trolley graveyard was a privately owned collection of streetcars on 19 acres of track stretching back into the woods. The owner, my good friend Ed Metka, passed away earlier this year and the cars are being scrapped.https://www.abandonedamerica.us/the-trolley-graveyard

Ed was about the kindest man you'd ever meet, just a gentle, big-hearted guy who could tell you everything you'd ever want to know (and a lot more) about every trolley in his collection. If I got to pick who my grandfather was, he would've been the person I'd have picked

I'm just going to throw this out there: I have been getting a ton of new follows, and a lot of them appear to be bots and fake accounts. I think we can mostly agree that bots and fake accounts are not a great thing for the majority of people in the Fediverse who aren't looking to artificially inflate follower counts - a process that really isn't beneficial to anyone who wants actual authentic engagement - and I'm concerned that this will eventually lead to the sort of spam plaguing Facebook.

I probably don't need to explain why fake accounts and bots are bad, but I'm going to anyway: spam and scams are the biggest threat they pose. They also make it hard to determine accurate metrics and as much as I hate to say it, metrics are important if your account is part of your business. Thankfully, there's no algorithm here, so a bunch of bot followers aren't going to consign posts to oblivion by not interacting, but they still take the fun out of a platform really fast.

World's largest on-the-nose metaphor the 990-ft long abandoned ocean liner SS United States is being towed to its final resting place at the bottom of the ocean off the Florida coast after decades languishing at a port in Philadelphia. RIP, old friend.https://www.abandonedamerica.us/ss-united-states

The abandoned Church of the Transfiguration - one of my favorite places, now long gone. Check out the gallery and find out the odd story of its demise which, oddly enough, involved Anne Hathaway's (now ex) boyfriend: https://www.abandonedamerica.us/church-of-transfiguration

There is no sadness and disappointment in the world that can compare to that of a dog, who has loved you and trusted you with all of its heart, yet for some horrible reason has not been rewarded with every single item of food in your home.

It doesn't matter if the food is poisonous to dogs. It could be chocolate covered grapes doused in antifreeze. You could invent a translator to explain it to the dog. It does not matter. They are still as disappointed in you as a conservative dad whose child is going for an MFA in interpretive dance.

@thomas_klopf sounds like a dilemma. I do believe ruins have their own inherent worth and thus merit being allowed to exist as they are, but I seem to be in the minority with that opinion. Once you tear it down you don't have the option to change your mind in ten years when an ideal purpose arises. Not with all buildings, of course, but significant ones like this deserve it iIMO

The Budd Factory in Philadelphia manufactured everything from train cars to auto bodies to jet and tank parts. By the 1980s, though, their sales had slumped and their factory in Philadelphia was abandoned. https://www.abandonedamerica.us/the-budd-factory

The Third Presbyterian Church in Chester, PA was one of the town's few surviving landmarks. Progress was being made to turn it into a community art center, but it was destroyed by arson before the plans were completed. https://www.abandonedamerica.us/third-presbyterian-church
