I think the original study is just doing the ratio of new car price and the average annual miles driven in those cars. Electric car owners clock significantly less mileage than any other type of car, and the higher costs make this value off. https://www.iseecars.com/most-driven-evs-study#v=2024Doing some maths, assuming the average EV $/mile is 3.8c/mile (https://ecocostsavings.com/electric-car-cost-per-mile/) and the average gas $/mile is 15c/mile (https://medium.com/@alex.domash/us-gasoline-prices-are-relatively-moderate-824a189a33fa), then we can come to some other figures. The original study says the average gas car costs $40009 new, and the average EV $52387 new. That's $12378 in difference, and I think you'd have to drive 110517 miles in the EV before breaking even compared to a new gas car, which if the article says the average EV owner drives 10256 miles a year, that's 10.77 years to break even...assuming that there's no other costs like maintenance that are worse on EVs compared to gas cars.

With the shoe on the other foot, I don't think there's any benefit for a consumer to have an account compared to before. Naturally a lot of people will be upset when they're not getting anything out of it, and there's lots of unknowns of what the account actually means for them.

Powershell 5 is the default that comes with Windows 10, but they really should be using newer versions. The default user agent I get is: "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows NT 10.0; Microsoft Windows 10.0.22631; en-AU) PowerShell/7.4.1"

My university had this one second year computer science course on systems modelling and proofs that was such a massive filter (only 30% of students would pass it). It used to filter out most of the women who were in the first year subjects.

I think AMD's strategy for anything under the RX 6600 is APUs; the newer 8700G has 12 RDNA 3 CUs which puts it around where the 6500 XT is in performance. The 6400 XT and 6500 XT both weren't really meant for the desktop either (they were just capitalising on crypto miners wanting to buy anything in 2022).There's lots of 6600s around but anything else is really drying up in supply here in Australia. I can't find any good value Ampere GPUs and all other RDNA 2 models are pretty rare. The one value buy we actually had was the Intel A770 was really cheap here for a long bit of time.I'm hopeful about Xe 2 on paper though but we'll have to see how that manifests in real world performance and the price they set that at. It seems that AMD's considering what used to be budget cards as just APU components now though. No idea what Nvidia's doing other than maybe they think the return for the effort is just not worth it compared to selling million dollar server cabinets.

It's gonna get worse with Lunar Lake and possibly future Intel mobile CPUs where the memory is on the chip itself like the Apple M chips do. https://www.anandtech.com/show/21425/intel-lunar-lake-architecture-deep-dive-lion-cove-xe2-and-npu4

I'm always surprised that companies keep reinventing personal assistants. This time it's virtually no different from the Siri craze from 13 years ago, especially when a lot of applications don't even use any machine learning and are just rebranding their existing algorithms.

The average game dev is only at a studio for 18 months, so most of the talent has generally been rotated out of the studio before the first game even ships. Usually most of the follow-up developers are nowhere near as passionate (and sometimes a bit insidiously "wanting to put their touch") once the sequel gets greenlit. Indie devs, while their quality can vary quite wildly, usually have a better pulse on what makes a worthy sequel than the big studios these days.

Every job I've been accepted for has basically been exactly something I've already worked on and had in my resume. 😔 I'm not sure if they need to look into the complexity of your experience if they'll eventually get candidates who already have the domain knowledge of that type of product.

Does the DMI link have enough bandwidth for the extra lanes you need? Intel 700 series have an equivalent bandwidth of 8x PCIE gen 4 lanes on top of anything directly attached to the CPU, although that's also attached to the SATA, USB, and other networking if that's also used.

I wonder what the average consumer will think of these names, and whether they'll realise we skipped 1st gen on desktops. 👀

It's been pretty gone from Australia since August. Fortunately the 5700X3D is most of the gains for $350 AUD ($200 USD) so it's a worthy chip for upgrades from Zen 1. Otherwise yeah a new platform might have to be the way to go.

My parents live too far for fiber to be routed to their place so Starlink is their only option. Just today the router popped a capacitor; won't turn on, no warranty, and it's a non-standardised plug so you can't replace it with anything else. Not too happy with how spotty it was ahead of time but it's unfortunately better than anything else for them.
