@LewieKong@retro.pizza Absolutely. Also, sometimes thoughts need to expressed in the middle of other thoughts, which is why I constantly use semi-colons and "--"s to interrupt myself while typing. lol

Discussion invite: Do you have a "third place"?I've been hearing about this idea that your home is your first place, work or school is your second place, and that there are amazing benefits to having a third place that is community space for socializing and does not emphasize commerce. This could be a church, a barber shop, a library, a rec center, a park, etc.I do not have a third place, and apparently I am not alone. Since the US has been and continues to be increasingly car-dependent, especially in the suburbs, and community spaces are disappearing and giving way to commercial properties, we don't have many third places left here.The Fediverse is probably the closest thing many of us here have to a third place, but research has shown that it's just not the same. Online communities are amazing, but they can't replace the mental benefits one gets from an IRL third place.So what's up guys? Do you have a third place? If so, what is it? I've been on #Lemmy for a few months, but I'm just becoming aware of #kbin, which looks pretty cool as a content aggregator and micro-blogging hybrid platform! Has anyone messed with it enough to have an opinion yet?Also, I just discovered you can subscribe to kbin magazines on Lemmy as if it were a community. I'm assuming this works in reverse. The fediverse rocks.

CW: Pictured hate crime, truck vandalized with F-slur and tires slashedMy friend's neighbor had their truck vandalized. I do not know this neighbor, neither does my friend, but I've heard that there are some shops that will fix things like this for free. Does anyone know if a shop in the greater #Seattle area will help with something like this?Again, I don't know this person, but it made my blood boil and I just had to see if anyone on #Fedi knows anyone who works on vandalized vehicles like this. @IdahoLark@syringa.social these are great. You could do a vomiting one, you could do a hole in a stretched nostril so it goes up their nose, you could design it like a little house, you could make it a UFO, you could put the hole at the top and draw a little body under it so when they poke their little head out they will look like they're wearing a silly outfit or like a mech suit or something.

Almost got scammed selling some stuff online. 🤙Had a person send me their number as an interested buyer and told me to text them. I did (first mistake), and we arranged a meetup time. Then they asked if, for their safety, they could send me a six digit code (some of you already know where this is going) that I could repeat back to them to verify myself.I said, "absolutely!" And sure enough, I got a Google Voice verification number. lolIf you're not familiar with the scam, shady people will take your phone number and try to create a Google Voice account with it. If you provide them with the 6-digit code that Google sends you, they can "verify" that they are you, and then basically use your phone number to run scams, commit fraud, etc. It's nasty business.I called them out, blocked them, then reported them to the marketplace website and to the FTC--though, almost certainly, they were using the phone number of another poor soul to carry this out.I used to work as a social engineer, running phishing campaigns (ethically, with consent lol), against Fortune 1000 companies to assess their level of vulnerability. Luckily for me, I was super familiar with this, but most of the people I told about it have said, "Oh, I probably would have fallen for that...", and even I set myself up for it.So that is why I'm posting this. Please be aware of sketchy shit like this. If someone is asking you for a verification code over SMS or email, tread with EXTREME caution. Also, it's usually pretty shady if a stranger you're already chatting with wants to move to a new platform. Not always, but if someone emails or messages you on Facebook to ask you to text them, that's a little weird. I'd had legitimate buyers/sellers do that, so it's not unheard of, but it should put you on guard.If you buy/sell/trade online frequently, it's a good idea to use a dedicated MySudo number, VOIP number, and/or a burner phone for that.Stay safe out there, kids.#Privacy #Security #Scams #Craigslist #FacebookMarketplace #eBay
