Hello, all! I'm Alan, and after years of the folk over at mastodon.art patiently suffering with my long threads on sustainable tech, I've finally created an account here! I'm a media and publishing professional by trade, but I've been teaching myself engineering and science. My main aim is to do what I can to explore sustainable technologies, share the ideas, and hopefully help in some way! You can read some of my posts over at https://medium.com/@nexusomega#introductions

@speskk @strypey as they point out in the next toots, Google killed federation for GChat once their priorities shifted, and because a large amount of XMPP ecosystem became dependent on Google, things really stagnated after that point.

The work of this Irish tinkerer building a air-powered railway for his farm from the ground up is simultaneously inspiring and ridiculously charminghttps://youtu.be/QLpsTR888CY#solarpunk #ecotech

Back of the envelope calculation time: How much power could you generate by slapping solar panels on top of freight train cars? Let's assume:- Train car carrying 40' ISO containers as available roof surface- Average solar irradiance of 3.0 kWh/sq. m/day- 25% photovoltaic conversion efficiencyRoof area for 40' container: 30.272 sq. mSolar input on roof: 90.818 kWh/dayCaptured power per roof: 22.705 kWh/day#renewableenergy #solar #solarpunk

Could you use a pyroelectric generator as a regenerator in a Stirling engine? Pyroelectric systems work via temporal fluxes in temperature, and a regenerator is nothing but a temporary place to drop off surplus heat before starting the compression phase or a Stirling cycle. On first blush it *seems* like a possible good match. Time to dig deeper into the literature.
