Just found a #Mastodon instance "dedicated solely to corporate brand promotion." Only catch is, the entire server is a gigantic parody, just the way we like it. https://brands.town/explore

Currently having slow download speeds and no option to choose a resolution while playing videos on #TubeLab. Already tried moving to mobile internet and my sister's Wi-Fi. My home server doesn't seem to be the bottle neck either. Could it be @tilvids being saturated? @apps

@tilvids @apps If I'm already following a user on my personal PeerTube account, do I also add a follow on the corresponding `@cdn01.tilvids.com` account, or should P2P automatically deal with this?

@tilvids Can certainly say the same! Posted the same message on Twitter and the Fediverse asking for help regarding a Steam Deck. On Twitter, nobody replied; on the Fediverse I got two replies in record time

@tilvids I'm already paying for my own #Fediverse instance capped at a set number of instances... being me and eventually my mom. Fortunately I only need to pay for the internet, and a VPS to bypass NAT and have some remote backups. All in all, even if I consider the costs of the entire electricity and internet bills (my home server only uses a fraction of that cost of course), it costs about $100 USD a month

@apps Is it normal that whenever I boot the application, it always starts at the exact same old toot? It never refreshes when I scroll up and click on another toot, and doesn't seem to honor the option to "remember my place in the timeline". It only refreshes when I manually clear cache. Running on a self-hosted Pleroma instance, if that's a factor

To everyone considering to jump ship from #Reddit to #Kbin or #Lemmy: please do yourself a favor and first request a backup of your data ( https://www.reddit.com/settings/data-request )!

So, if that were the case, why not remove federation with everything, and require users to log in to view the content in the first place? That way you would guarantee that everyone that views or interacts with the community is properly vetted, in line with the "coffee shop" analogy you're establishing here. (Something that would have been best achieved by using a non-federated forum software such as Tildes, but alas, it's a bit too late to do a platform change)

Banning the vast majority of users from interacting with your instance at all solely because of where they decided to make their first account on isn't exactly nuanced either, and I get the technical reasons why you had to do so. But if that's the main goal, then removing federation altogether, and expecting users to submit to the approval process before interacting with your instance, would have been the better procedure. Think less Starbucks, more of an exclusive cafeteria based on a monthly subscription and with bouncers at the entrance just in case.

@GoatJamesAz @rysiek Eh I'll bite:I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Lemmy, is in fact, a part of the Fediverse, or as I've recently taken to calling it, the Threadiverse. Lemmy is not a protocol unto itself, but rather another free software server of a fully interconnected Fediverse, made useful by the ActivityPub protocol as defined by the World Wide Web Consortium. Many computer users interact with a version of ActivityPub every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of ActivityPub which is widely used today is often called Mastodon, or Lemmy, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the ActivityPub system, developed by several independent projects such as Mastodon, Lemmy or Kbin. There really is a Lemmy, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the Fediverse they use. Lemmy is the implementation: the program in the server that allocates the messages to the other servers that run in the Fediverse. The implementation is an essential part of the network, but isolated by itself; it can only interact in the context of a complete federated network. Lemmy is normally used in combination with either instances of itself, or of similar projects of the Threadiverse such as Kbin: the whole network is basically ActivityPub with Lemmy as a node. All the so-called Lemmy servers are really nodes of the Fediverse!#Lemmy #Kbin #ActivityPub #Threadiverse #Mastodon #Fediverse

@clive Any recommendations for future cyclists to get quickly accustomed to cycling? Expecting a movement to go widespread when it requires literal pain from everyone involved doesn't sound like a good idea
