Completely last minute half improvised presentation. I'm in Amsterdam this Thursday 9 March afternoon to quickly talk about the past 9 years of LURK.https://networkcultures.org/goinghybrid/program/There will be approximations, shortcuts, questionnable historical retelling, digressing anecdotes, biases, inaccurate timelines, screenshots, totally unscientific argumentation, tiredness and confusion, browser tabs, ambivalent hope, sarcasm, and hand drawn graphics. Above all, maybe also a quick peak into they way LURK has been developing in the past years and the context of such development.

Permacomputing Aesthetics: Potential and Limits of Constraints in Computational Art, Design and CultureThis coming wednesday 14 June, @praxeology @sandu @viznut and myself will give a quick overview of a paper about #permacomputing at the Ninth Computing within Limits 2023 workshop.Paper can be found there: https://limits.pubpub.org/pub/6loh1eqi/release/1 and the whole collection of LIMITS 23 papers is avail there https://limits.pubpub.org/ninth-computing-within-limits-2023Our paper is a personal take on the potential and... limits of the current permacomputing practices in the context/constraints of #art #design and #culture production.I will attend the workshop at the Amsterdam LIMITS hub hosted by @doschhttps://doc.pondr.nl/s/wt7vmXF0v#Big thanks to our reviewers Eli Blevis, Birgit Penzenstadler, and Robert Soden for their helpful feedback. We also thankthe different groups and people currently gravitating around the term permacomputing for contributing to a growing number of rich discussions and debates. We are particularly grateful for the suggestions from @Greta @michal and @neauoire aswell as to @creativecoding for providing us with a platform to share an early reflection on permacomputing aesthetics. Finally, we would especially like to thank @loriemerson and @l03s for their substantial and stimulating comments! <3

MODULAR MATTERby Jian Haake [ohjian]"MODULAR MATTER is the attempt to re-think desktop publishing through the concept of modular synthesis. The outcome is a tool with several independent and combinable hardware modules, each of them performing a specific operation with an operation-specific physical interface. MODULAR MATTER can be played like an instrument in order to generate unexpected printed outcome. The process of making the tool as well as the unfamiliar experience of using the tool hopefully sparks critical conversations around tool ecologies and helps to break open engrained ways of working."https://project.xpub.nl/modular-matter/https://media.xpub.nl/2023/thesis/modular-matter-Jian_Haake.pdfhttps://pzwiki.wdka.nl/mediadesign/User:Ohjian/Final_presentation#modular #synthesizer #eurorack #postscript #esp32 #raspberrypi #graphicdesign #electronics #XPUB

This has turned into an epic thread!had to 🥲 quite a few times Thanks so much everyone! Also got a few extras via other channels.Basically there is now enough for two bingo cards: one for people having to rely on crappy everyday computer tech but not necessarily aware of specific software/hardware jargon and practices, and one for those who are more familiar with their inner workings. We can use the first bingo, as planned, as a device to start discussions around non obvious concepts/patterns, and we can use the second one for group therapies :thinknyan: We will put the two on the #permacomputing wiki and in this thread. If you have more, do not hesitate to keep adding, we will make more grids or make room for more entries if needed!

So there's enough stuff for 5 thematically sorted bingo boards! :)Will first work on one related to the topic of productivity, for the #permacomputing Sunday pres at zinecamp, and will go through the others slowly but surely afterwards. Will also update if anyone adds to the thread!

Well the #zinecamp2022 presentation turned out great. We ended up making a selection of the prompts, and used that to play bingo with the audience for the second half of the #permacomputing presentation. As we were going through the game, people from the audience could share how such or such prompt was relatable or an ongoing source of suffering. The winner got freshly baked cookies as reward. We will do that again for sure.As for the rest of the prompts, there are so many and they are all so good, so I will just make a quick command line bingo board generator and put some of its output on the wiki :)(with everyone properly credited ofc)So if you have more ideas, check the top post of this thread for existing entries and feel free to add missing ones!Photo credit: @automatist !

Hey,a bit of a desperate attempt here. I'm looking for a copy of HMSL, the Hierarchical Music Specification Language.:amigacheck: https://www.softsynth.com/hmsl/ :amigacheck: It's a "programming language for experimental music composition and performance" written on top of Jforth (http://www.jforth.org/). The source code is now open and hosted on Github, however this effort seems mostly driven to make available a Win32 port, and archive some historical, and now unsupported, files, like the Amiga version. However it looks like the Amiga version is incomplete. Similarly while the shared Amiga/Mac documentation has been published, it misses the Amiga specific annex. This is why I am looking for the original floppy images and documentation. The author is not responding so far, so I'm asking here in case that's something someone may have lying around!:boost_requested: boosts appreciated!#Amiga #FORTH

Practising Permacomputing: Call for workshop participants"This autumn is dedicated to Practising Permacomputing; a concept and a nascent community of practice-oriented around issues of resilience and regenerativity in computer and network technology derived, among others, from permaculture principles. As part of this community, space is offered to makers and thinkers in digital culture (and other connected areas) to put the fundamentals and applications of #permacomputing into practice through a series of workshops, a meetup, and a concluding day of public presentations with guests. Join us to explore permacomputing futures!"https://www.fiber-space.nl/project/permacomputing/#workshop #selfhosting #datacenter #recycling #electronics #plants #amsterdam

@cian I think there's a misunderstanding :) from the wiki:"Most importantly, there is no #permacomputing kit to buy. See permacomputing as invitation to collectively and radically rethink computational culture. It is not a tech solution searching for a problem."A huge problem we see is that any attempt to counter the dominant ICT industries, is somehow expected to be also operating at a technosolutionist level. It's a paradox but also is at odds with a link we make with degrowth practices, and wile we're not in favour of going back to the water clock, we surely think we could do with way less computation and screen time in our life. More specifically in a way that get rids of harmful, exploitative, extractive forms of computation. It's an incredibly difficult ambition, and that's why we position pmc at three levels https://permacomputing.net/three_levels/ : collective problematisation, practical degrowth now, and thinking/making for tomorrow. If you're into HCI, then I could imagine that the last level could be a space more relevant, and there are already some people trying out things, for instance @permacomputer, @jakintosh @praxeology and a few more.Bottom line, it's an incentive to try things and join forces with a roughly shared agenda. There's not going to be a one-click install to a better computational culture :)

Repurposing Chromebooks: a general method.A bit more than a year and a half ago, I bought around 10 cheap Chromebooks to better understand how they can be turned back into regular PCs. Here are the notes I took. I just wanted to remember the overall idea and not a detailed list of step-by-step instructions, as it differs from each model. Basically, I just quickly documented the installation pattern, so I can do it again next time, or teach others to do it.https://moddingfridays.bleu255.com/Repurposing_ChromebooksMaybe this can be useful for others, who are looking for a rough TL;DR process, or are contemplating the idea to do the same and would like an overview of the different main steps.#chromebook #chromeos #laptop #permacomputing #google #linux #coreboot

It's like the AT&T ad from the 90s. Except you're not a fancy architect joining a remote meeting on a beach from a luxurious island resort and discussing new ideas about their atrium project. You're an underpaid burned out part-time teacher stuck in a packed and overpriced shitty french camping, prompting like there's no tomorrow the new tests and curriculum you were just asked to deliver because it's urgent. Oh and your laptop, one of the many near EOL school chromebooks purchased last year, just keeps on crashing because there's a heatwave. A little discomfort in your belly is hinting at the fact it may not have been a good idea to try the outside all-you-can-eat salad buffet with such a weather. It could be stress too. Let's just assume it's both.
