Aside from getting bikes to folks in need, encouraging use of bikes in general is important to me.I get bikes donated anywhere from <5 to >50 years old. I see some of the same defects over and over. Most bike shops are priced for high end users, so self-maintenance is the norm. There are a LOT of simple repairs/adjustments you can make to your or your child's bike to keep it rolling & safe. I welcome any "how to" questions.Please boost; I haven't much reach here yet.#Bikes #BikeRepair

I started Second Chance Bikes in 2018. I had been repairing bikes donated to two charities at which I volunteered, needed funding to keep it up or expand. So I picked a name launched a website, and announced it on the bird site, which brought both in-kind and cash donations, and on Nextdoor, which brought donations of bikes. I've supplied over 300 refurbished bikes to unsheltered people and low income housed folks, mostly refugees, both adult and child. SeeSecondchancebikes.org. for more.

🧵1) I spent some time this morning getting this 1998 Miyata converted road bike ready for a recent refugee youth. My Syrian refugee friend texted me Sunday about him. He lives in Chicago, where a pretty decent network of bikeways & protected bike lanes can enable a lot of exploration for a teen whose life to date has been turmoil. I thought it was going to need tires and had put it in back of shop while doing other bikes. I pulled it out Monday evening and ⤵️

2) hung it on the stand to evaluate but then spent Tues. dismantling and disposing of frames of several junkers TRYING to reclaim my garage. So this morning I checked it over and found it was in great shape. Tires were flat and i had assumed old. Nope! Just slipped off rims, with rimstrips trailing, looking shabby. All i had to do was find salvaged rimstrips, remount and inflate tires. Test ride went great. Shifts much more smoothly than the newer department ⤵️.

@MacropodCare They came directky from a big tire/tube supplier. Amazon just processed the transaction. I expect to hear from the supplier when they see my review. Or I'll try to reach their cust. Svc ppl. I think they had a bad lot. Pribably already know about it.But I like your idea of seeking sponsorship, like Nascar. Tires are my biggest challenge. Tubes are too, but not as pricey.

@MacropodCare tires vary a lot. Some basic ones can be about $15. But i scavengeca lot of those from wrecked bikes I scrap. Better tires for nice bikes can be $30 or more.The things i postedcaboutvwere inner tube though, not tires.

4)Then for a change of pace I dug out this cutie. It, too, has been sitting around for weeks. It was dropped off with handlebars and pedals removed, ziptied to the frame. Rear tire flat. So I hung it on the stand where that big Miyata had just been and out it back together. Then I discovered the rear wheel could not be removed without breaking the chain. No wonder someone gave it up! I took it off, discovered tube was good but had a bad valve ⤵️

5) stem. So i replaced that, remounted tire and wheel. I had expectwd to need to replace the tires, but they are fine,just dirty. I will use whitewall cleaner on the tires, add training wheels (thanks, y a'll!) and some streamers and some tiny tot will get a nice surprise.Pics to be added when done.
