@nergal @tilvids @thelinuxEXP @thelinuxexperiment Universal Blue already offers some custom Fedora builds that are nice. For me it’s not so much trust, but control. I like having control and the immutable distros move most of the control upstream. Great for people or use cases that don’t want or need that though. I’d put my mom on Ublue Cinnamon easily.

@nergal @tilvids @thelinuxEXP @thelinuxexperiment #Mint is one of my favs. If you select btrfs on install I think it still sets up the subvolumes in the way Timeshift likes.

@nergal @tilvids @thelinuxEXP @thelinuxexperiment they don’t tell you anywhere, but if you do custom partition and use btrfs for root, it configures the proper subvolumes for root and home. Ubuntu too.

@tuxedocomputers OEMs overcharge. I get the lowest available and upgrade it myself. I avoid brands that try to prevent that.

@alexelcu I recently upgraded Ubuntu 9.04 (Hannah Montana Linux) to 22.04 which included all of those changes and then some (another init system in the middle, grub to grub2, conversion from i386 to amd64). For the most part it was transparent as far as any typical desktop user would see. Stuff did break here and there, but nothing related to those (usually X11). Most transitional packages have been very good, especially in the last decade.
