@simon @tomscott @tchambers What if we're at the other end? We've fed LLMs and transformer AIs one human internet's worth of knowledge, and we got out a few semi-cogent chatbots. We fed them all our artwork, and we got some models that can paint in a few styles. We fed them millions of hours of traffic telemetry, and got a car that can mostly drive itself until something weird or unexpected happens. But each of these has a hard limit well above an average human, well below a professional.

So it turns out the main difference between #Twitter and #Mastodon is the sheer number of confident idiots you bump into over there. Just blundering through life angry that the world doesn't recognize their bad ideas as unvarnished brilliance.Whereas here, most people are just fucking regular people, talking, posting pictures, a little news and random chatter. Not...crazy deep in their own worlds.

Do I need to remind everyone that right before a Peter Thiel triggered the bank run on #Siliconvalleybank, #bitcoin was about to drop off the scale below $20,000. Over the weekend in the panic it soared to peak over $26,000.If you bought in, you're an idiot. The #crypto hype is over. But a lot of very wealthy people wish that weren't so, and expect more shenanigans whenever there's a drop again (likely within the next month).

I find myself using #mastodon less and less, because nobody sees my posts, and following has slowed to a crawl.Meanwhile I get dozens upon dozens of #Threads notifications every day and in a few weeks my account there has thousands of followers. @Gargron, we need to talk about what this says about algorithmic feed placement...

@Gargron @Grant_M People don't really go to social media to be ignored and buried in the chron-feed.They go to engage, and grow, and connect with each other, and share. Threads made that easier in 6 weeks than Mastodon in 6 months. And that might be worth examining.

@feinzer @Gargron @Grant_M I literally follow everyone I reply to or replies to me.I do the same thing on Threads. Except it actually has an algorithm that seems to connect me with more and more of those people I end up liking and responding to and following.

@feinzer @Gargron @Grant_M To me that argument can be deconstructed by analogy to Google. People are always trying to game Google's algorithm. And they're changing it constantly (and kind of failing in recent years, imho). But can you imagine Google without an algorithm?
