MS is kinda the boogeyman of chronic disease. It sucks. It’s an incurable* neurodegenerative disorder and most treatments are like $70k+/year until you’re 60. The likelihood of progressive disability and/or “financial toxicity” are high. *Check on immune reconstitution therapies in 10 years.

But. There ARE those immune reconstitution therapies. There are clear biological markers (brain lesions and junk in a spinal tap). Once you meet the criteria, health and disability insurance cover things (though maybe not those IRTs 😡). People tend not to argue as much about accommodations.

Most MS is relapsing/remitting, which means you have a flare up and then it goes away. You might be a more disabled than your prior baseline, but it’s generally less bad between flares, and the flare symptoms are treatable.

One of the big symptoms of MS (often people’s first) is “lassitude,” which is a particular type of fatigue. It can be seriously debilitating. It’s nothing like the kind of fatigue common to Long Covid (aka post-exertional malaise).

Lassitude is like having your energy levels set lower, but you basically respond to exertion normally and recover with rest. PEM is nothing like that, and too much exertion can make your disability progress. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2023/07/chronic-fatigue-long-covid-symptoms/674834/

(Yes, sometimes people with MS get PEM, and sometimes people with Long Covid don’t. There’s overlap.)

Early MS often doesn’t hurt at all, between and even during flares. Long Covid sufferers (and remember the longest have like 3yr) report a lot of different pain symptoms — PEM, rheumatoid/reactive arthritis symptoms, etc.

Early MS often doesn’t affect motor systems much. Long Covid often includes Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia right away, which isn’t the same mechanism but has similar effects on your life.

Nobody knows wtf Long Covid is yet. There are no biological markers or diagnostic criteria that insurances (health or disability) will reliably accept. Accommodations can be really hard without an MRI to wave at them.

Long Covid sometimes spontaneously remits — so far. We don’t know yet if it might come back! MS sometimes isn’t active for years.

Look, I am not trying to play disability Olympics or who’s suffering more, or that long covid cases are always bad or MS is always easy.I’m saying most of us don’t have a good frame of reference, but if you’d do stuff to avoid a 1 in 10 chance of MS, consider doing that to avoid your 1 in 10 chance of long covid.

@mjg59 but then you might miss the payout. Far better to remove the troublemakers.
