Can someone explain what the value prop of Proton Mail actually is?So you get an email account that can only do encrypted emails to other ProtonMail users so you can only safely email the other people you know that also use it and most people you know are probably not going to be using it because they also don't see the value/network effects benefit to make it worth their time? So, why?It still allows plaintext emails so Proton can still read those as they come in before they get encrypted with your key?Who the hell thought this was a good idea? Who is gullible enough to use this crap? PGP is free if you really want it

@feld I went the self-hosted email route for a while, and once that became a time-suck I moved the family over to Proton. Not necessarily for the encryption, but for a host who "promises" not to read my mail so that I can be targeted by ads. They've added features, since, which increase the value I get for paying them (password manager, VPN, throwaway email addcesses, cloud storage, etc.)I can't truly trust any entity on the Internet, but Proton hasn't actively tried to erode it.

@feld the idea is the provider cares about provacy and will not betray you or will take measures as to avoid having to violate privacy, the encryption thing is secondary.

@feld You can send non protonmail users password-protected emails that use symmetric encryption. You only need to both know the passphrase. The encryption is done client side so proton can't read shit.
