"Antares Nuclear’s microreactor, the R1, is designed to generate 100 kW to 1 MWe of electricity and is rated at 1.5 MWth (thermal). It is a compact, modular unit weighing approximately 10 to 15 tons, designed to fit within a standard 20-foot ISO shipping container for transport by truck, cargo planes (such as the C-17), or helicopters." https://www.zerohedge.com/energy/rebirth-americas-nucl...

This is good news. Diesel and 'decentralized' Nuclear power are the futures of transportation fuel and infrastructure power respectively. So, it's very heartening to hear we finally have a micro-nuke setup like this. Unironically made my day.

Yeah I think it's good. And a 6 year refuelling requirement is great. It's basically just a big box that gives 1MW of power for 6 years.

That's the most fantastic part of it. With the shipping container friendliness of the design, plop one down on your homestead or whatever and don't worry about it for a half decade. Clean, reliable power in your backyard. Absolute game changer.

Unfortunately they don't just let people buy nuclear material ;)

All it takes is a little uranium and you can turn a royalist into a libertarian

Google says 1MW is enough for a few hundred homes at normal power draw. Drawing less power will stretch out the time before you need to refuel but it's more complicated than just "1/10 the power = 10x the fuel cycle" because of the physics involved. Still, it feels like we're moving into the 21'st century finally. These are going to be very useful on the lunar surface and beyond.

Eh, eventually. I'd like to think this will replace gas generators for a lot of concerns one day.Sooner or later it will trickle down to the individual property owner.

Yeah it's more the space realm I was thinking of.And as it's going to the army first, perhaps for emergencies. No reason not to have a warehouse full of these things packed up and ready to be lifted by helicopter to small towns or whatever when there's an emergency.Even then though, I'm not sure they'd do that rather than diesel.

They'd power directed energy weapons, masers and lasers. But it would just be drone and missile bait. So it gets circular. You need the reactor to power the DEW's to protect the reactor that's needed to power the DEW's to protect the reactor that wouldn't need protecting if it wasn't there in the first place. Sounds very American MIC. Someone is making money.

Using this figure, a 1 MW (1,000 kW) power source could theoretically support approximately 719 homes (1,000 kW / 1.39 kW per home). This 700-to-750 home range serves as the national benchmark for annual energy sustainability. If you reduced it in size to a single family home energy source it would be about a 42 pound box.
