my "Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad for Mac models with Apple silicon (USB–C) - US English - White Keys" keyboard is very close to being the perfect keyboardwhich is INFURIATING as a known Keyboard Maker/Modifier.

this thing is 180$ and glued together, the chances of me opening it up, hacking the CPU, and putting it back together in working condition? very low

@pho4cexa the weight. I'm still coming off being bedridden, so I often have to use the keyboard sitting on my abdomen, and the lighter the keyboard the better

@foone This moose HATES the "no user serviceable parts inside" construction favoured by the beancounters: "If we ultrasonically weld the case shut the suckers will be forced to buy a new one when it inevitably fails" trend.Mind you, the extruded aluminium Apple keyboard (that $Previous_Owner left the (alkaline, of course) batteries in, causing them to weld the battery compartment plug in solidly) is almost as bad from the "screw the customer sideways" Stillsons have been considered. 3:OP>

@hippiegunnut @krutonium yeah the weight is almost as good, but the keyboard I'm using is a 100% layout, which is also one of my requirements. It looks like the equivalent 100% Keychron is significantly heavier

why did I get a job at Apple and then steal their keyboard firmware signing keys? is it to enable some shadowy 3-letter acronym agency or foreign power to hack the wireless keyboards of journalists and activists? no I just wanted to remap one (1) keyboard key and you fuckers wouldn't let me do that

the most reasonable path forward, with a minimum of illegality:1. get another one of these keyboards at ewaste or something2. pry it open, desolder the STM323. write my own keyboard firmware4. solder in my own pre-programmed STM32

@krutonium @hippiegunnut mmm, I've looked at their models. They don't work for layout reasons (and the closest to a good layout is also out of stock in wireless)Thanks, though

@mdhughes I need to install that anyway, to get a compose key.The problem though is that I'm trying to remap the function key, which I believe is handled internal to the keyboard. The mac never sees it as a modifier key, it just gets a brightness-up keypress, not FUNC+F2

I have been idly thinking about building a special keyboard proxy, to better support multiple OSes from one keyboard. You'd pair your wireless keyboard to the proxy device instead, then it'd talk to the different PCs over USB, with definable rules.I basically already built this (but with USB) for my Poetry Keyboard, but building a generic more powerful version has always been on my todo

this would solve some keyboard problems but not my function key problem, because the function key isn't a key that shows up on usb/bluetooth, it's handled internally

@foone Alternately, build/buy a device that sits between the keyboard and the host and rewrites the key codes on the fly. It'll cost you some lag, but it could work.

@foone I want a USB USB keyboard and mouse interposer. I switch from Mac to Linux daily, and if like cmd- to do nothing on Linux, but in Mac mode, do something real. Mouse extra buttons 4,5 to send copy-paste appropriate to the OS in question. I still prefer wired, particularly because my keyboard of choice is a first generation Microsoft Natural keyboard (I own at least 10).Tldr demand exists!I bought a USB host chip at one point, but easier would be a pi zero w.

@foone reminds me of the time I determined that the easiest way to get Quake sounds into a HyperCard stack was to record some silence into the stack, save it to a PC floppy, open the binary on a PC and replace just the audio sections with the exact length of desired sound. Why Apple didn't think I needed any way to import sound from anything other than a microphone I have no idea.
