I hate how cute baby raccoons are because it make it even more important that they are scared of people if they are going to live in the Bronx (and they do just fine here as long as no one feeds them)So I have to chase them when I see them because they should think of people as dangerous. (This might be less needed in a less urban area.)

When people say "I could never live in NYC there's no nature" I really don't understand what they are talking about. Every day is filled with creatures.

@futurebird sounds to me like those people have never actually visited New York City. I’ve only visited it once. And that was during the early days of Covid when the city was a ghost town. But there is a lot of nature there.

@futurebird I haven't spent a lot of time in NYC, but I've been there, and a lot of other cities, and I've seen a lot of urban wildlife.

@SordidAmok @futurebird I saw this wild bun today, and a woodchuck near this spot last week in the Bronx.

There is a gate to this rail yard where the raccoons live. The younger ones sit behind the gate and look at people walking by and reach out with their little hands which makes me worry someone is feeding them.I chase them back to the rail yard. About 8 years back someone called animal control about them and we don't need that again.

@futurebird I live close to two large parks in eastern Queens, so there's plenty of wildlife. Too much of which like my garden, unfortunately (including raccoons, oppossums, squirrels, feral cats being the most common). The feral cats (and other neighborhood cats) are my fault, we grow a lot of catnip.

@futurebird There was a news story about a guy who threw a stick at some young coyotes to shoo them away... and one of them fetched the stick! He did the right thing and chased them off. I don't know if I would have had the self control to do that. Puppies! 😆

Animal control put out traps and took like six raccoons to long island??? Then two months later we had raccoons again. I still don't understand how taking them to long island would help.

@futurebird you have stumbled upon the secret raccoon distribution network, which works tirelessly to ensure every realm has its own supply of raccoons

@futurebird Maybe they're trying to punish the raccoons by sending them to Long Island?

@bridget @futurebird Apparently Raccoons are familiar with the Long Island Railroad. I would think Rockland or Westchester County would make a lot more sense. But, I’m not an expert on raccoons.

@futurebird Do they not have Metro cards? I assume any real New York scavengers ride the subway like everyone else.

@futurebird People in smaller cities have a very wrong view of larger cities as paved hellscapes where people get mugged every time they leave the house.
