@futurebird True lawful is the most annoying. People who will follow the law whether or not it's aligned with "good" or "bad"

@futurebird If you haven't seen @darius 's "D&D alignment of the D&D alignments" chart, I'm happy to introduce you to it.

@futurebird I voted for Chaotic Evil. Not that the definition of the alignment caused a problem. Instead, players who chose it often seemed to use it as an excuse to steal the spotlight with nonsensical odious personal actions that derailed the flow of the game. The party is meeting with an important NPC?The "evil PC" decides to urinate in the corner of the room.Stuff that isn't so much "evil", just annoying.

@kkarhan @mhoye @darius Think of it as the alignment of the people attracted to that alignment.

@futurebird I think this question is in a way antithetical to the idea of d&d alignments. It's forcing a dualist structure onto a moral/alignemt system that tries to be non-dualist. It's also assuming the alignment of the respondent to be some version of good but doesn't specify which one.If you are chaotic good, lawful evil is the greater problem, if you are lawful good chaotic evil is a greater problem, if you are lawful evil chaotic evil is less helpful, if you're chaotic neutral, lawful neutral is a greater enemy to you than either chaotic good or chaotic bad, etc.

@marta I don't think "being a problem" is the same thing as being just... evil. I agree that evil is a kind of boring one-dimensional notion. It's possible to see something as evil only if you ignore aspects of why it exists or how it works.

@futurebird One of the scary things about conservative Evangelicals is that more than one has told me that the worst thing about D&D is that they believe "Lawful Evil" is a contradiction in terms.

@futurebird @mhoye @darius As I understand it, the alignment system by Dave Arneson trying to deal with a problem player at his table.I used to say that every D&D player I knew would argue that the alignment system doesn't make sense, but it would almost make sense if... And this would lead to a heated argument.Computer RPGs used to insist on some version of the game rating your actions as good or evil. I remember people condemning Elder Scrolls: Morrowind as "postmodernist" because it doesn't do that.I can't think of a TTRPG other than D&D (and its retroclones) with anything like a formal alignment system.

@futurebird depends. With the right type of structure, lawful evil individuals can be restrained. But once you get too many of them and they organize, watch out.

@futurebird @mhoye @darius I think there is a theory somewhere that most players in a CRPG (and other video games, too) can be characterised as being Neutral Evil. For instance, the LG paladin player with maximum reputation points who still breaks into people's houses to steal their valuables. It's fascinating to think about.

@futurebird CE occurs on the backside of many a technical object. Try turning over a keyboard, phone, laptop, network switch, wifi router, etc, etc. Says something, perhaps.

@futurebird I feel like Lawful Evil just uses Chaotic Evil for its own purposes and hides behind it. Lawful Evil folks are like... the architects of destruction, herding the chaotic evil minions around until they aren't useful anymore and then saying "hey, it wasn't me..."

@futurebird At risk of getting on my reply guy high horse (but you did ask, so that makes it OK)...Chaotic Evil is self limiting. It can create hand-crafted horrors but by definition it can't scale. Lawful evil OTOH can create an entire system of death camps where the perpetrators are "just following orders".
