when I'm ruling the world with an iron fist from my orbital laser base, one of the first rules I'm going to make for consumer electronics is that you can't sell a device with an LED if the LED doesn't have an off switch.

not, like, turning it off, mind you. I'm just saying this external m.2 enclosure I'm using shouldn't be making my head throb with its flashing white activity LEDI've covered it up and everything! but enough light is leaking out into this dark room that it is making my migraine throb in sync with it

@foone Old-school black electrical tape. I keep it specifically for blue LEDs. One layer is enough that I can sleep in the same room. 2 blacks it out entirely. I'm looking at you, Apple TV, in the darkness somewhere.Someone needs to make a power-on LED that includes a photodiode and automatically dims to 5% of ambient. And then we mandate it by law.

@foone You are 100% right! And I‘m NOT just saying that because I‘m afraid of people with space lasers. So please remember that when you are responsibly aiming your orbital space laser.

@foone the SSD should throttle itself so you should be finemaybe something like a sleep mask is the best systemic way to handle light sensitivity if that makes sense?

@foone a little bit hot (around 50.ºC is apparently better for NAND to work, but higher temperatures hurt it, yes). I use a mini portable handfan when I have an SSD external enclosure that heats up too much and I make sure the SSD's contact pad on the enclosure is well placed. As for the LED, as someone else said in the thread, thick, dark, nail polish on it does wonders. Alternatively I'd use (vynil) duct tape.

@foone this remind me of people building soundproof case for air compressor. Obviously the thing need to pull air in to work so it cannot be in a closed box. Their solution is a box with a S shape inside, which the air can travel while the sound get trapped in.I hope you find a compromise satisfying both you and the SSD

@foone a hot soldering iron is the universal off-switch for any stubborn LED that some manufacturer puts into a device 😈 (done that a few times. Especially for devices in the room where I sleep)
