Public service unions are some of the only functioning unions left in the US, although this is changing. The LIRR workers are defending their excellent (and deserved) level of compensation with a strike today. The unions are demanding wage increases of 14.5% over four years. The MTA management is trying to low ball them since the MTA has no money. Getting into the city will suck today if you are coming from Long Island.

Personally I think management should offer the union the raises they want... but only for employees who started working in the past 8 years. Make it a big raise for the new hires. These kinds of deals tend to always screw the younger workers. Call them out on that. LIRR will get a raise the only question is how much and how many days will the public be annoyed to get to that decision.

I like the LIRR transit workers union about threes times as much as I like the police union and about half as much as the firefighters union. That should tell you what you need to know. They are well compensated and this is how they keep it that way. This could be YOU, this could be ME. Everyone should have a union that fights for them like this.

It's interesting how the railroads and transit were consolidated into the MTA a long time ago, but there are still divisions in how the unions work. MetroNorth also has a union and they have had far fewer scandals and strike fights with management. So, don't think of this as bus drivers and subway operators on strike. It's just the LIRR. The MTA is running shuttle buses to help the public cope, they will be driven by MetroNorth. Isn't NYC fun?
