This music video may be "cute" and "funny" but I am trouble by the implied existence of some kind of ... "cat power ring" that can call cats from all over the world to defeat dangerous kaju... even if only dough based.Should such power be in the hands of cats?Discuss. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JH3mYQaSA7I

This animation is hypnotic in the best ways. It's like what I think tiktok must be like, but I can never stand tiktok because there is too much AI (I get motion sickness from it) and too many annoying things. So it's like if tikTok was good?

@futurebird I'm pretty sure one reason we love cats is that we recognize their psychopathic (if also sometimes cuddly) malevolence and are entertained at is containment, its taming. Cats should never be given any power more serious than "can poop when it wants to."

@futurebird there are no credits at the end. Not on the web site either. Not a single person's name. Is this all (animation and music) AI generated? Wouldn't someone want credit if it wasn't?

@futurebird It’s funny to me that people call it “making biscuits” (in my family it was always more ambiguously “kneading the dough”) because you really don’t want to knead biscuits. You basically want to mix them as little as possible!

@clayfoot I've never seen animation that was this consistent from an AI video system. The animation has a clear storyboard. Maybe there is a system that can work with a storyboard now? (which means the video needs someone to direct it) The vocals are either autotuned to the extreme or generated. But the whole thing is coherent and I would be surprised and impressed if it wasn't a lot of work to plan out and put together.

@clayfoot @futurebird I strongly suspect it's machine generated. First time I saw it, I went looking and couldn't find more than one human-sounding name. Looks like the play is use music and video to drive a physical merch store.

@futurebird @clayfoot it doesn't look machine generated to me, or at least if there was GenAI involved it was done with close human direction; I don't think the publisher was "the ass of the centaur".The vocals are heavily processed and the animator made extensive but judicious use of rotoscoping which might trigger some people, but it was pretty well done.Just because there is a lack of credits doesn't mean AI. For various reasons real artists do maintain a degree of anonymity... Banksy, Angine de Poitrine, Puddles Pity Party, etc. are not AI at all and have followed similar MOs.

@futurebird @clayfoot Hmm, check out the book Exploded View by Sam McPheeters, set in a post-climate change Los Angeles that had video cameras everywhere. Distributed processing on the networks is so powerful that fake versions of any video can be made and put up in near-real-time. So first thing police must do is find and preserve the real video of the crime...And the danger of virus infections in people's viewing glasses modifying what the person sees in real time.Good story.

@msh @clayfoot I have a "if it's bad it's bad, if it's good it's good" policy and I've noticed that AI is a frequent, but not exclusive source of badness. My problem with AI has always been that it fails to do what it claims, not that it just exists. Although I think there are questions there too. But that failing is the big issue for me. If they used AI I'd like to know how.

@ophis @clayfoot @futurebird It's certainly possible for a single person to create this using various computer tools without resorting to generative AI. Hard to prove either way.

@mansr @ophis @clayfoot And were a solo artist they could have written a song. Sang it, auto-tuned themselves (few of us have a voice that can carry all those parts, or work that well) arranged it and did midi in something like garageband. Then made a story board and animated every 10th frame (still a but load of work!) and you have a fun video.A full week of work if you have good ideas and talent.

@mansr @ophis @clayfoot I think the result is really impressive and everything works together well. If someone tells me they used "some AI" I'd be annoyed. If someone thinks this is "mostly AI" I would have learned something new about what AI could do (but also go looking for what it is ripping off, since how do you get coherence without a director with a vision for the whole thing?)

@mansr @ophis @futurebird It is possible indeed. And if so, why no credit for doing it? Everything is attributed to "Frugit". The web site asserts that "All content on this website including images, logos, and product designs are the property of Frugit's Dispatch and may not be used without permission." If AI-generated, that's simply not true: It's all public domain.https://frugit.com/policies/terms-of-service

@clayfoot @mansr @ophis Stuff online has used this kind of attribution forever. One reason might be if they work in TV or music and are using their work tools after hours. Another can be to make a new label. Who made it? Frugit did. That's what you search for. Let's see what happens next.

@futurebird @msh The music is almost certainly generated; frugit cranks them out regularly. I don't know how the animation is done so well, but Tilly Norwood (at least) makes me think it can be done now.

@futurebird @mansr @ophis certainly true. And somebody is sending out those monthly frugit stickers. I hope it's mostly an industrious person or team: It may be fraud to intentionally deceive others to make money on public domain works (including all AI-generated works)

@clayfoot @futurebird @ophis People do things anonymously or pseudonymously all the time for various reasons. Here it could be part of the act, to add some mystery (they still get YouTube ad payouts), or perhaps they are contractually prohibited from using their actual name outside of a label deal (not unusual). On the flip side, those using AI tend to either boast about it at every opportunity or cover it up using fake names and fake photos. This does neither.

@mansr @clayfoot @ophis I'm wary of saying something is "too good to be AI" since I can be fooled like anyone else. It would not feel great to discover that something I sincerely liked was totally AI generated, just a statistical average of popular and pleasing things that I've rationalized to have some creative vision or meaning behind it. I think this is why people who like AI can be very defensive about it. That said? I think this is too good to be "just AI"

@mansr @clayfoot @ophis One of the issues we must grapple with is the fact that some talented and creative people **will** use generated content in their work and some of that work may even be good. Will it be better? Will they be able to make more because of the tools? Maybe. And that's when the stolen content issue comes up. How do I feel about the vocals in this video which are based on Black gospel and rock singers, that's part of their charm? I feel like someone didn't get paid.

@mansr @clayfoot @ophis I don't. I'm just thinking about how this is complex, you know?Let's say we find out the creator wrote a song, drew the animation, but used an AI music generation system to make the vocals. Does that change the way that I see this content? I don't think it should, but it's hard to know until we know. And I do think that there are issues of art theft looming in the background for all of these systems. We should have an training tax that pays to a public art fund.

@futurebird @mansr @ophis Solomon Ray is entirely AI-generated gospel (music, vocals, lyrics, and videos), and it topped Christian music charts last year. Creator Topher Townsend got paid. The AI music generator service got paid. Does seem like someone must have been left out.
