RE: https://toot.fedilab.app/@apps/116540883530168586Someone suggested a forum (like Discourse) instead of a chat room, since it would be searchable and easy to reference. It makes sense and would bring more reliability to project support. I'd still need help from moderators, just like with a Matrix room, but a forum would let people find answers without having to ask. I'm personally drawn to this idea. What about you?

@apps I'd ask not Discourse though, as it's so javascript heavy and way too 'helpful' (changing what you wrote) when posting. Of course I don't have to maintain it.

@apps forums are great. We need more of them again. I'd recommend xenforo as the software foundation

@FritzAdalisDo you have any alternative to suggest? I'm really open to finding the best solution.

@appsI really like forums for async & more persistent discussion!Threading is a must, and while chat options like Zulip supports that, it doesn't quite feel the same as a forum. From I've seen of Discourse it has a lot of nice features, but it's been a while so I have no idea if there are "better" options out there now.

@apps Does there exist some forum-software that also supports #ActivityPub? That way you could allow people from the Fediverse to participate, avoiding having to register new accounts everywhere 🤔

@apps I mean phpbb is still around I guess, I haven't looked into boards in probably a decade though. Also management and upgrades are important for your workload but largely invisible to me.

@apps Hi Tom. I thought about it on my run, and I have to say I'm not a fan of either. I applaud your decision to route support from Mastodon to Codeberg. This is the right way in my opinion. Forums are nice, but even there, most of the questions will either be duplicates (solvable by a mod) or have to be answered by you. Take issue 1418 for example. Only you can decide and either close it or implement it (both should not be too time-consuming).

@apps So ultimately, it will probably be a lot of cross-referencing for mods (to Codeberg or your toots) to close threads, and the rest will pile up for you. I'm sorry if this sounds negative. I know a forum can be fun, but they can also be a lot of work. Here on Fedi, the hashtag is good for questions too. There are many people helping out already. If you want something transferred to Codeberg, you can tag me, and I'm happy to open the ticket. I don't think another medium will be beneficial.

Thanks @HurricaneWeaselI was considering NodeBB, which supports federation so people could participate from the Fediverse directly. Not for issues, but for simple questions not yet answered. The rules would point to Codeberg for feature requests and bug reports.I started thinking about it because people often ask what happened to the Matrix rooms. That said, your point is valid and your feedback really matters.
