Interesting, the Texas Department of State Health Services had put in a new requirement (post Camp Mystic) that all youth camps have fiber optic Internet service. (being challenged in court) "...The Texas Department of State Health Services has reached an agreement with a group of youth camp operators regarding legal requirements that all camps licensed by DSHS maintain fiber optic internet service.Under the agreement, camps that maintain a redundant, broadband internet service will not face potential license denial or revocation for not having fiber service during the 2026 camping season, as long as they meet all other safety requirements...."https://www.dshs.texas.gov/news-alerts/dshs-reaches-agreement-fiber-optic-requirement-youth-camps#TXwx #disasters #CampMystic

@ai6yr Is this for emergency alerting? That seems like a very specific requirement that doesn't correlate especially well with reliability. Why not satellite or terrestrial wireless? And is fiber service even available everywhere there are camps?

@mattblaze Yeah, this is because their cell phone towers failed at Camp Mystic. Seems like a problem with fiber distribution not being available in a lot of places.

@ai6yr I dont understand why the requirement is not for "fireproof and redundant means of communication" instead of such a specific thing, fiber, unless its a wink towards some favored provider c@mattblaze

@tomjennings @ai6yr @mattblaze At the risk of repeating myself ... Follow the Money. Soe vendor wants those contracts and a brown envelope or two has passed hands ... every fucking time. And seriously, Fiber is NOT fireproof, unless it's deep underground and then you still have the endpoints (that melt). And there's always this ...

@elfin @tomjennings @ai6yr @mattblaze @Viss Why are they taking a picture as the squirrel takes Ohio offline? Shoo it away!

@FritzAdalis I dunno... if it was me, I'd let it. But I like squirrels.I can tell you from experience, if you provide them with walnuts even weekly, they'll leave everything else alone. Walnuts are like a religious experience, such things rumored to exist in heaven. I'd give them a coconut but that would be sheer frustration; but maybe drive them to create giant-nut-opening technologies, then we'd really be in trouble.@elfin @ai6yr @mattblaze @Viss

@tomjennings @elfin @ai6yr @mattblaze @Viss What about Brazil nuts? Are squirrels fans of those?

@FritzAdalis Not my clan, or at least the two I offered to. Wouldn't eat pistachios either. One wouldn't eat peanut butter! Most do though. Unsalted all, of course.I think they decide at some point to not try new foods, probably safest. Or maybe they're just as fussy as humans.@elfin @ai6yr @mattblaze @Viss

@elfin @tomjennings @ai6yr We really need to stop using walnuts as insulating material in cables.

@vt52 @mattblaze @elfin @tomjennings So, having tested the "do rodents find your wires tasty", the answer is "YES", and the fix was Honda "Rodent Tape" (so far). Plus sonic repellers. But the capsaicin tape really does work.

@ai6yrThis happened in the 70s, but a vastly lower rate. But there's what, 10, 100 times more wire in a car now? And so much is mission critical. We had rats in q warehouse take out phone lines, gnawing the s insulation off. I rhink they just like the texture. @vt52 @mattblaze @elfin
