@futurebird I've been outside in quarter-sized hail, which *hurts*. I cannot *imagine* how bad anything bigger than that would be.

@futurebird I have personally witnessed ping pong/golf ball sized hail. You do not want to be outdoors when that's coming down.We had a good hail storm in 2014 when I lived in SC. $5k damage to my truck (parked outdoors), and every roof in our subdivision wound up being replaced. Fortunately insurance covered almost all of the cost!

@futurebird At least some of those are standardized, which makes them valid frames of reference. All baseballs are the same size, all golf balls, etc. It's when the point of comparison is incredibly variable that the absurdity happens. Potato-sized hail? That could be baby Yukons, or it could be russets, and that makes a *hell* of a difference.

@futurebird I understand David Letterman once lost an earlier job as a TV weatherman in Indianapolis for reporting hail, "... the size of canned hams." A wonderful sense of humor that was, perhaps, not appreciated fully by some in his audience at the time. Still cracks me up because, of course, canned hams come in a wide variety of sizes; although I don't suppose any of them would be welcome hammering down from he skies!

@benroyce @dgar @geckzilla @futurebird Although Spain uses the decimal metric system, for some time now, when news programmes want to convey to the public just how large an area is (for example, a piece of land that has caught fire), they say: “An area equivalent to X football pitches has been burnt.”Sad but true.

@ModestinoSycamore @benroyce @dgar @geckzilla I don't know if I'd call it sad. Standard objects of comparison can make numbers and communication more clear. I get a little tired that it's always SPORTS but things are standardized in sports. Frankly I wish I had a list of small object that were *globally* familiar that I could use when asking people the size of the ant they saw. I need:Something about 2.5mm longSomething about 1cm longSomething about 1.8cm longAny ideas?

@ModestinoSycamore @benroyce @dgar @geckzilla This is because ants come in about 3 sizes. Ant people will know what you mean by "tiny ants" (2mm) "little ants" (3mm) "regular ants" (5mm) and "big ants" (over 1cm)Though do you measure the legs too? It can get messy. Which is why sometime you just say "tiny ants"

@bruce @ModestinoSycamore @benroyce @dgar @geckzilla Rice might help one tell if they saw a "big ant" or not but that's not the most common problem. Mostly I want to know if the ants were tiny 1 to 3mm at most or medium. Sometimes medium ants are the smallest ants people have ever noticed and they think they are tiny and they aren't. I guess just get out the ruler.

@futurebird @ModestinoSycamore @benroyce @dgar @geckzilla Well in school we were always told a tumbnail is around a cm, although that is probably very rough and depends on the person. One thing that was a surprise to me in that regard is that in TV shows and so on we always got told that carob seeds were used as a standard of weight because they always weigh the same. A year ago I got my hands on some actual carob and had a very precise scale with me and turns out they differ in weight by a lot like 20 % or more. Maybe if you take packs of 50 or 100 you get statistical averaging.

@futurebird I guess peanuts are quite known globally? And they have multiple sizes incorporated: length of a single nut core and length of 2 nut cores within their shell, for example. Downside is, you always have to say which you mean.

@bruce @MamaLake @ModestinoSycamore @benroyce @dgar @geckzilla When I was in college I always studied mathematics or computer science. But as an adult I've grown to love biology. It's charming that your object of study has a mind of its own and might just walk away. I wish that would happen in math too.

@raymaccarthy @ModestinoSycamore @benroyce @dgar @geckzilla Impossible! Judging by the lovely photo of mossy rocks you have pinned you will find all sizes of ants in your area. The only people with just one size of ant are in Antartica I think. Because there are no native ants and only two introduced species and both are "little ants"

@futurebird @ModestinoSycamore @benroyce @dgar @geckzilla In fact I rarely see ants here IRL. Even spilling sugar doesn't work. Every size of spider including a few giant ones that don't match the large spiders on Irish wildlife sites, which is a little worrying. Also no moles, snakes or woodpeckers. No wolves since 18th C.

@futurebird that's a tricky challenge 😅Torx 8M10M18Meh, but using standardized hardware, even if it seems less obvious, makes sense because I guess every human has access to them. Even football field means different things across the globe, and dandelions don't grow in all climates. Plum or cherry pits assumes the same cultivar, so could surprise someone at some point. @ModestinoSycamore @benroyce @dgar @geckzilla

@futurebird I recently got a 10cm tattoo on my forearm and it's been really useful for making those sorts of measurements tangible.I don't play ball based sports nearly enough to have an intuitive sense of what those measurements mean.Went with cm instead of inches because 2.5 cm is close enough to an inch for the resolution I get here.

@futurebird @ModestinoSycamore @benroyce @dgar @geckzilla There are apps aimed at people expecting a child that tell you how big the fetus is. They usually have multiple comparison scales but they all annoyed the hell out of me because they don't use anything standardized and sometimes even have product placement in them.If you get a good scale of actually standard sized objects going it would be nice to see one that isn't garbage
