In the way back times, I ordered a gin and tonic from a bar at a club. With a friend. Friend regularly overtipped the bartender, so he'd get niiiiice pours.What I received that night was a pint glass of gin with some tonic in it. Had a buddy in the Navy who moonlit as a bartender. He got more tips than all the other bartenders and customers would regularly order just from him; reason being was that he was mormon, so instead of mixing drinks according to personal preference, he followed the recipes, meaning the drinks didn't taste like shit and you could consistently meter your drinking all night.

Learning how to meter was a major change for me. I started drinking straight vodka for just that reason; I wouldn't "drink" it, I'd just sip at it at a rate that let me maintain where I wanted to be.

I stopped drinking liquor and stuck to beer after my 1st deployment; port calls were so much better when you could spend every night of liberty carousing about instead of just one night of getting hammered followed by 3 days of nursing a hangover, plus it was much easier to sober up and take someone elses watch for cash if you wanted.

Do it the traditional way. Pour a shot over a sugar cube into a glass. Light it on fire let it burn a bit, then pour cold water until the fire goes out. There are special spoons for this and some absent bottles include them.
