The hilarious bit is the navy already has two kickass future weapons developed for the Zumwalt's Advanced Gun System - the 6.1"/155mm LRLAP gun and the rail gun. The former was cancelled because _each shell_ would cost $1M. And the latter was cancelled because.. well, railguns aren't useful if you can just saturate a target with $3M Tomahawks which would carry much larger payloads at 20x the range. Build a giant barge that can launch 500 cruise missiles == more effective than a battleship.
