Could someone explain DRM to me? All I know is that it reportedly causes performance issues, and is supposedly some piracy stopper?

@TrueMasterCole DRM, at least the competent ones that are super invasive and are difficult to crack, has some marginal benefit in increasing sales over piracy rates, in the short term within first week to six months of release, which is all that matters to suits and shareholders. It is only a deep black negative for consumers, like with anti-privacy practices and decreased performance, which is why I avoid software with (non-Steam) DRM and third-party launchers like the plague, now.Oh well! My current graphics card cannot run Pragmata anyways, even with resolution decreased to 2k or 1080p.

@SuperSnekFriend @TrueMasterCole at least in capcoms case they get rid of denuvo usually a year later.Meanwhile sega/atlus denuvo might as well be the mark of the beast. They have some massive addiction to denuvo even for 20 dollar games.

According to spooke, Capcom usually removes it, so it sounds like it's not integrally baked in. Is it more than just a file that can be easily edited or removed by the user?

@SuperSnekFriend @TrueMasterCole I don't believe anyone has actually used it on consoles though. The whole denuvo on switch thing did happen.Except no one would pay to use it on switch when it's so resource starved that you could not afford to run that bloatware on the device.:cat_laugh:

@TrueMasterCole @SuperSnekFriend it's baked into the .exe file that is used to run the game program. They'd need to recompile one without it and push out an update to get rid of it traditionally.

Denuvo specifically is like a vm the game runs in or something from my understanding which is why it nukes performance

There is a 'cracked' version of the game using Hypervisor if you want to try it. Supposed to work, but I've not tried it (or any of the Hypervisor 'cracked' games for that matter). Relatively new method, so be wary.

@CrazedWeevil @Spooke @SuperSnekFriend @TrueMasterCole >There is a 'cracked' version of the game using Hypervisor if you want to try it. Be careful with hypervisor cracks, they're really cool and interesting, but also somewhat risky. It is essentially not a crack at all, but a virtualization of your OS to make denuvo think that everything is fine. The hypervisor is making the virtualization to constantly trick denuvo into thinking the machine is sending out good signals it isn't. Which means you're still getting a performance hit from denuvo and now an additional hit from the virtualization, plus you have to disable a lot of security features (not just the dumb ones but some of the actually useful ones) to get it to work. This also means to my understanding that hypervisor cracks are completely incompatible with linux. For more educated reads of it that aren't my understanding after skimming, https://cs.rin.ru/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=156407 is a pretty good writeup. Basically, it's for if you really want to play the game without paying. Probably works best if you have a second computer you don't need to worry about.

@SuperSnekFriend I read these third-party EULAs because I am apparently a glutton for punishment. Some are truly twisted. Grateful that Steam so prominently flags this stuff pre-purchase, tbh.
