I keep saying the US should "leave right now" but have I really thought about how this would work? Have I considered the consequences? I have. Initially Iran will continue with their tolls. They are not the only country who charges a toll like this. They will discriminate against the US and US allies. But, over time they'll want tolls from us too. More importantly with the US gone Iran can't attack gulf states, US bases or anything anymore.1/

@futurebird Does the US still have allies?

The US has shown Iran that we can bomb anything in their country. Iran has shown the US that we can't quickly find all of their air defenses and destroy them, we'd need to send in ground troops and risk them taking hostages and killing US troops in far greater numbers. Iran has shown they could cripple gulf states and hit our bases. The US would "win" a ground war but it would be an atrocity. We all have a material understanding of this reality now.

@clacksee Technically yes. Taiwan, for example is hurting since they are an ally and Chinese ships are going through but not those for Taiwan. That's just one random example of how the US umbrella of protection has become a liability. If we do the kind ground war that would force this to stop, it will destroy the very oil producing facilities everyone is worried about making the whole thing moot. And it would kill so many people. Atrocity.

@winter Leaving is as simple today as it will every be. It only grows more "complex" with time.

@futurebird I think if the US turns Trump over to Iran they might completely open the Strait.

@lyda Very tempting. It shouldn't be but everyone is sick of this. The whole world could come together over this.

@futurebird Yeah, to be honest, I also think there’s a vast difference between countries that are treating the US as an ally and countries Iran would treat as allies of the US.

@futurebird I think a lot of things would be solved if Trump and Putin were turned over to Iran and Ukraine respectively. And honestly turning Trump over to Iran would have interesting effects in Iran.Obviously holding a bunch of billionaires accountable would solve most of the rest of the issues.

@clacksee Some of this is Iran using these conditions to settle old scores that don't involve us much too. Iran has a wish list of people they want to hurt and they are running it down as long as US aggression gives them cover to act. "Great Satan" more like "Great Excuse"

@lyda This is all nonsense though. None of these leaders experience any of the mortal peril they create for their people, for each of us, for your cousin in the Marines, or for your friend's uncle with a purse shop in Tehran. It's comforting to imagine a world where all of the peril were theirs. If I knew how that is the world I would make.

@jautero There is increasing support in US congress for not funding Israel at all anymore. Netanyahu wanted this war the most, may have talked our president into the "excursion" but like a tired toddler he's not having a good time anymore I think. I has always been hard for US politicians to even say "we shouldn't give Israel money for war" but these conditions have made expressing that idea possible. They can't do much if the US cuts off the money.

@faduda Well for one thing more people might notice what Israel is doing seems to be naked expansionism, conquest. Which the US is enabling. Is there more to it than that? What do you think?

@faduda I can understand how it might seem that way, but speaking of people in the US at least, from politicians to the general public consider how much better informed your average person is about Gaza now compared with a decade ago. Is it too little too late? Also yes. But there are big changes happening.

@futurebird @faduda I think what I've been hit by the most regarding Lebanon is that clearly shows that the Israeli government never cared about the level of violence of the Hamas attacks in October 2023. They apparently respond the same way whether it's full-on atrocities or just symbolic retaliation, it's just pretext anyway. It's what I suspected the whole time anyway, but it's much easier to prove now.
