@SuperSnekFriend Narrator: but then....they did...The barrier is actually 2 parts. Rather impressive that people have found ways around it. I'm never doing it, because I'm not some trooned out speedrunner 😆.

@TrueMasterCole The ones who found out the skip weren't troons. Cosmo explained the problem early on, but he lost all importance in speedrunning when he trooned out.

@SuperSnekFriend Honestly, even before I found out the amount of trannies in speed running, I never really liked it. I get some aspects of making certain tedious parts faster, but there are two things that make speed running unappealing. First, it turns a game from fun to a chore. Secondly, by skipping large parts of game, you literally get less to enjoy. I like to explore, so restricting the time available isn't fun to me. It's why I prefer the item collection requirements in the Metroid prime games over the time requirements in the others.

@TrueMasterCole I do admit that there are plenty of games that really shouldn't be speedran, but should have challenge runs instead, like strategy games.

@SuperSnekFriend @TrueMasterCole Pokemon style RPGs are very good for challenge runs such as Nuzlockes.

@SuperSnekFriend Now CHALLENGE runs are interesting. Videos along the lines of "Can you beat (insert game) with only/without (X)" and similar challenges, require creative work arounds that almost nobody would never think of, and make for more interesting content.

@TrueMasterCole I've seen that they, thankfully have been becoming more prevalent the last few years, especially with stuff like From Software deathless and hitless runs, "100 Days in Minecraft"-type videos, and RetroAchievements.

@TrueMasterCole @SuperSnekFriend Kinda want to respond to this because I have a lot of mixed feelings on speedrunning overall but...>First, it turns a game from fun to a choreThat's kind of missing the point. See, speedrunning started with people who absolutely adored games enough they'd replay em over and over again, to the point playing the game itself normally became a chore. Thus autists figured it would be fun to get even faster and better at the game to make a new challenge that would stop playing it normally from being a chore. >Secondly, by skipping large parts of game, you literally get less to enjoy. Again, this is a hobby for those autists who have played the game enough to the point they could recite every single line and describe every single area from memory. It's not that they don't want to experience the game, it's that they know every single thing about the game to the point the normal gameplay loop is less exciting. Now of course all of this is a problem now as many speedrunners have trooned out and the community is a festering pile of shit full of people who just want the speedrun award for fastest clear on day one of release, but the idea didn't originate from that trashy community. I'll never properly speedrun Kubinashi Recollection myself, but I love that game immensely and learning how to do all of the speedrun tricks for it to make the game faster after I finished it made me love it so much more. It's almost comforting to play in that manner.

@Iffine @TrueMasterCole @SuperSnekFriend this is a good defense of the logic behind speedrunning. I've always personally gravitated towards score play or challenge runs when I get too good at a game, though. Time-based challenges just don't click for me in general.part of the reason is that I don't see the appeal of running a lot of the popular games. Like, minecraft speedrunning makes zero sense to me. Might as well just go to a casino at that point. Also things like goldeneye, where the camera is pointed at the ground for half the run to reduce lag.I would much rather watch (or play) something like dustforce, which is built for speedrunning, versus a game that becomes visual clown vomit when played at speed.

@hickory @SuperSnekFriend @TrueMasterCole Yeah, how interesting a speedrun is definitely falls under a game to game basis. RPGs for example are just extremely boring and tedious when doing a speedrun. Unless there's some cool glitches or whatever that allow for crazy stuff to happen, speedrunning an RPG is basically just doing a normal playthrough while skipping all story and doing the bare minimum required grind to beat the game, all while hoping RNG doesn't screw over your run 5 hours in forcing an immediate restart. But then you have a game like Mario 64, where the BLJ is kinda fun to do and fun to watch. The game is finished rather fast while also being an entertaining experience. Platformers in general come out best on this since most have glitches or tricks for advanced players and are generally easy to "read" and easy to play. I mentioned Kubinashi Recollection (as per usual, it's one of my favorite video games), I can easily see why someone would speedrun it having done the tricks the game has to offer (even if a good chunk of them are unintentional). The immense satisfaction in pulling this off was great.

@Iffine @SuperSnekFriend @TrueMasterCole learning some of the mario 64 glitches actually was fun, but it made me realize how absurdly bad I am at 3d platformers lol.btw your post reminded me that I haven't played a proper touhou fangame in years. Looks like I have one to check out now, because this gameplay checks a lot of boxes for me.

@hickory @SuperSnekFriend @TrueMasterCole >proper touhou fangame in yearsI have been collecting as many as I can on Steam, at least of the ones that have some semblance of quality. I actually put off Kubinashi Recollection at first because it seemed a little generic to me. Then I decided to play it and I love it to bits. It's a super passionate puzzle platformer with tons of love for both Touhou in general and Sekibanki poured into it. Music is amazing, everything is cute, the story is pretty alright, it's a great time. It's also absurdly cheap, only $12 often on sale for less than $10.
