In a way the problem he's trying to solve in the story is a kind of antagonist. His research into maritime warfare and armaments is itself a character in the story. And because it *is* a character someone will write a fan fiction about the man in some kind of romance with his research. Can you imagine? It's not cannon, this ship of thesis.

@futurebird Didn't Theseus end up living in the rotten hulk of his old ship, whilst reliving past glories? And he died when it fell in upon him.

@Virginicus Anyone who give agony to ants is bad obviously. The "ant agonist" is the one in the story who makes the ants miserable.

@akareilly @Virginicus "duck to the face" is a phrase that William Gibson gets hung up on in one of his books. Something visceral about the sequence of words. https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/177245-he-took-a-duck-in-the-face-at-250-knots

@futurebird or is it the philosophy that conflict is a necessary and healthy part of any ant's life?@Virginicus

@futurebird over the years the gun was refurbished and modified to fire at steeper trajectories until it was properly referred to as a mortar. At what point was it no longer cannon

@ellie @Virginicus "She has been terrorizing the town with a horde of giant ants"This source seems very judgemental to me.

@futurebird @Virginicus So it's *not* about 'agony aunts'?
