if you want to build a secure system, you have to assume the dumbest (who isn't dumb, just not a nerd like you), most naive (who isn't naive, just doesn't know tech like you do), most helpless (who isn't helpless, just doesn't understand tech terms, especially in terrible documentation), most impatient (who isn't impatient, just doesn't want to study computers for 15 years) user and design your system around it.

@lanodan besides, there is overlayfs. Not sure about performance implications of it for rootfs but hey, at least it's still can be used like a normal distro. You know, just in case if "dumb" user eager to learn how the system works.

@a1ba I don't even think you need overlayfs, just have the core set not go in FHS or something like that.Or heck, /bin /lib for read-only core set, /usr read-writeable.

@a1ba In a way yeah, and systemd can go cry in a corner or something.And that's from me who did the /usr-merge stuff on my systems because I think it makes no sense for the systems I have where they effectively are both managed the same way.
