       There are more consequential news stories, and more upsetting and flashy news stories, but one story from last week concerned our president telling a long-winded lie about his uncle teaching the unibomber at MIT. It didn't get much attention but I keep thinking "why would you lie about *that*?" But I think I've worked it out.1/2

       You see this was a conference about AI and Trump considered AI to be "nerd stuff"--  so he tried to tell an interesting bit of self-puffery about nerds. Being "too smart" is no good. I think that's the moral. He's brought up his uncle at MIT before in this kind of context. Does it whenever he's around STEM people or CS types.It's a bit like holding on to the football trophy. This reads as weakness to me, but I think some people think it's confidence. 2/2
