I mean I guess it makes sense, but if this dude was telling me I needed to live on a boat and sell all my positions I'd look at him and think "he kinda seems like a cult leader, maybe this is a cult"But then there is nothing easy or funny about trying to help people get out of cults. Especially when the cult has all their money and controls their housing. Ugh.

@Lily_and_frog It's partly a type of person, but also about getting people when they are in a state of vulnerability. I make fun of cults a lot, but I like to remember that anyone can be susceptible. They target people who are desperate for guidance, people who feel lost. Frankly, there may be many fertile minds for cults in the US with the way things are at the moment. It's worth checking in with people you care about just in case.Very smart savvy people aren't exempt.

@futurebird @Lily_and_frog My wife grew up in a Christian cult - fairly benign but still - and last night we met a guy at a party who grew up in a competing cult!Since these cults were in the US and the party was here in Rouen, you can correctly conclude that neither of them stayed with their groups. 😄

@futurebird @Lily_and_frog YES.And I'd maintain some of them are in more danger specifically because they think they are too smart to be vulnerable.Those folks are the actual worst, especially when they succumb, because they refuse to/cannot see it.

@grrrr_shark @Lily_and_frog When a person believes they are free of "weakness" to admit they have been taken in a moment of weakness can be an impossible horrible thing. It contradicts their entire self image.But, I've seen exactly that kind of "strong" person abused and used by cult like organizations. And it was hell to get them clear of the danger.

@futurebird @Lily_and_frog I am convinced a major reason the evangelical christians are so avidly supporting the wrecking ball approach trump has to government is that they hope to pick up many converts in the resulting chaos. In particular, note many of those evangelical groups have their own "religious charities" which compete with government welfare, but bombard poor people with their particular evangelical propaganda, and now said government welfare is being destroyed.
