New blog post!In which I show how I am powering a typical 120mm PC case fan from a USB port to quietly cool my Raspberry Pi cluster.CW: bad soldering skillshttps://stfn.pl/blog/59-powering-fans-from-usb-pi-cluster/#RaspberryPi #boinc #diy_electronics #blog

@stfn You can get case fans that plug in via USB you know?

@stfn why don’t you use USB 3? It can give you faster speed

@stfn @mikolasan gonna be extremely pedantic here and say that the voltage has not increased with USB 3, but the amperage limit was upped from 500mA to 900mA, so you can run a bigger fan that pushes more air, but not necessarily at any speed faster than what USB 2 offers.

@stfn @mikolasan what if i told you that type C cables and ports missing all of the USB 3.0 specific pins exist...

@stfn, I followed the instructions in https://www.instructables.com/How-To-Convert-A-Case-Fan-To-USB/ successfully last weekend to power a fan with a PWM connector using USB. It was fairly straightforward and worked okay.
