If you want to see what the GOP has in store for the rest of America, visit the Old South Republicans have a very specific economic vision for the future of our country, although they rarely talk about it in plain language: they want to make the rest of America look and function just like Mississippi. Including the racism: that’s a feature, not a bug.

@MarvClowder this is utter bullshit. There isn't an ounce of truth to it. NOTHING has been more destructive to black families than DEMOCRAT policies. Just look at the cities they have turned into shit holes all across the country. Go take a stroll in North Philadelphia at 9pm.

It’s called the “Southern Economic Development Model” (SEDM) and has been at the core of GOP economic strategy ever since the days of Ronald Reagan. While they don’t use those words to describe their plan, and neither did the authors of Project 2025, this model is foundational to conservative economic theory and has been since the days of slavery.

The SEDM explicitly works to:— Maintain a permanent economic underclass of people living on the edge of poverty,— Rigidify racial and gender barriers to class mobility to lock in women and people of color,— Provide a low-cost labor force to employers,— Prevent unions or any other advocates for workers’ rights to function,— Shift the tax burden to the working poor and what’s left of the middle class while keeping taxes on the morbidly rich extremely low,

— Protect the privileges, power, and wealth of the (mostly white and male) economic overclass,— Ghettoize public education and raise the cost of college to make social and economic mobility difficult,— Empower and subsidize churches to take over public welfare functions like food, housing, and care for indigent people,

— Allow corporations to increase profits by dumping their waste products into the air and water,— Subsidize those industries that financially support the political power structure, and,— Heavily use actual slave labor. For hardcore policy wonks, the Economic Policy Institute(EPI) did a deep dive into the SEDM last month: here’s how it works in summary. Summary: The Southern economic development model has failed to create shared prosperity in the region. In fact, this model was deliberately designed to do the opposite—to extract the labor of Black and brown Southerners as cheaply as possible. This report examines the racist roots of the model and provides the necessary context to challenge the enduring racial hierarchy in the South.

@MarvClowder yes. But Mississippi was a terribly poverty ridden state and was mostly democrats before Regan. That program did not create the conditions that have been there for ever. And the idea that Republicans want to suppress black people is a bald faced lie. In fact black people fared much better the first 3 years of trump than they have under biden.

@Phil We kept the South as an internal colony for a long time. But I disagree with you about Republicans being the friend of the Black man. Nothing could be further from the truth.

@MarvClowder the Republican party was established to abolish slavery. Republicans pushed for and passed the 13th and 14th and 15th ammendment. More Republicans voted for civil rights than dems did. dems sure haven't been their friends either. Dems made up the kkk. They talk a good game but the outcomes are disastrous. This is mostly true because the primary purpose of everything they do is to enhance and preserve their own power.

@MarvClowder Republicans have not changed positions. It's all gaslighting. And wikipedia has a credibility compromising liberal bias.
